Ladies Lose To Texas Lutheran At Home On Sunday
The Centenary women's basketball could not keep pace with the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon as the Ladies lost 89-55 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball could not keep pace with the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon as the Ladies lost 89-55 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (2-12, 1-5 SCAC) fell behind the Bulldogs (12-2, 6-0 SCAC) by a score of 65-32 at the half. TLU is receiving votes in the current D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and improved to 7-1 on the road this season and have won seven games in a row. Centenary lost its third game in a row and fell to 1-7 on its home court this season.
The Bulldogs shot a healthy 55.0 % (33-60) from the floor for the game and went 19-30 at the free-throw line for 63.3 % and 4-19 from beyond the arc for 21.1 %. The Ladies struggled on offense, finishing just 15-54 from the field for 27.8 %, 0-8 from 3-point range, and 25-37 at the FT line for 67.6 %. TLU outrebounded Centenary 43-33, grabbing 13 offensive boards and 30 on the defensive end. The Ladies had 15 offensive rebounds and 18 on the defensive end.
TLU won the battle in the pain, 38-28, second-chance points (15-12), fast break points (12-4), and bench points (46-18). The Ladies turned the ball over 20 times which led to 30 points for the Bulldogs, while the visitors turned it over 14 times which Centenary turned into 10 points.
Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) was the Ladies' high scorer with 16 points and she grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for her eighth double-digit scoring performance of the season and sixth double-double. Phillips scored 23 points with a whopping 20 rebounds on Friday against Southwestern, finished 4-10 from the floor on Sunday and 8-11 at the FT line in 30 minutes.
Phillips was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on Tuesday after she exploded for a career-high 26 points in the Ladies' win over Dallas at home on Jan. 12 with 19 rebounds now has seven double-digit rebounding efforts this season.
Freshman F Anaya Yunusah (New Orleans, La.) reached double figures for the fifth time this season as she posted 10 points in 22 minutes on 4-11 shooting. She was 2-2 at the FT line with four rebounds and a steal. Junior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) had eight points in 32 minutes and was 4-4 at the FT line with two assists, two steals, and one rebound.
Freshman G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) added five points in 22 minutes three assists, two rebounds, and a steal. Freshman G Kaysharia Woods (Zachary, La.) and junior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each scored four points, and freshman F Laijah Rockward (Houma, La.) scored three. Freshman G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) and freshman F Alisha Green (Lafayette, La.) each scored two and junior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) had one. Freshman F/C Marilynn Guillory (Sulphur, La.) played six minutes and did not score but grabbed a rebound.
Woods played 15 minutes and had two steals, Stokes was 2-5 from the floor in 16 minutes with two rebounds, Rockward was 1-2 from the floor and 1-2 at the FT line in nine minutes with a steal, and Cabrera was 2-2 at the FT line in 11 minutes. Green was 2-4 at the FT line in two minutes with a steal and Barrow played 28 minutes and had two assists and a rebound.
Three TLU players finished in double figures, led by 19 from Kailee Mulkey. Emerald St. Laurent scored 11 and Sarahi Jones added 10. Fourteen TLU players scored in the game and 16 played in total. Mulkey and Elexis Morado each grabbed five rebounds to lead the team.
The Ladies now hit the road for four-consecutive SCAC games beginning with a matchup against the Colorado College Tigers on Friday, Jan. 24.
