Ladies Fall In Opener Of 2022 Warrior Spring Fling To Host Hendrix, 7-6

Conway, Ark. - The Centenary softball team split a pair of games on Saturday in the 2022 Warrior Spring Fling hosted by Hendrix College, beating Westminster (Mo.) by a score of 4-3 and falling to Hendrix 7-6 at Warrior Softball Field.

The Ladies (2-2) opened their 2022 regular season with a non-conference doubleheader split on Feb. 5 against the Millsaps College Majors in Jackson, Miss. Centenary took game one by a score of 3-2 and then fell 8-6 in the second game as the Maroon and White have now payed three one-run games this season. Hendrix improved to 4-1 with the win over the Ladies while Westminster dropped to 0-2.

Centenary will play Westminster again on Sunday at 11 a.m. and Hendrix for a second time at 4 p.m. Hendrix and Westminster play each other on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Warriors defeated Westminster 11-3 on Saturday.

Hendrix led 4-2 after three innings but the Ladies scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game. The Warriors though, responded immediately by scoring twice in the bottom half to break the tie and regain the lead at 6-4. Centenary was unfazed and scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game but Hendrix scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The teams combined for 26 hits, with the Warriors producing 15 and the Ladies getting 11. Sophomore LF Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.), freshman 3B Viviana Rivero (Redondo Beach, Calif.), and freshman DH Alyssa Akers (Maurice, La.) each had two hits to lead the Centenary offense.

Cox had two RBI including a double, Rivero scored one run, and Akers also scored a run. Freshman 1B Kaitlyn Dickey (Church Point, La.) went 1-3 with a sacrifice fly and sophomore RF Isabelle Dominguez (Newark, Calif.) finished 1-3 with an RBI double. Junior CF Mallory Stout (Trinity, Texas) was 1-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Senior C Erin Lewis (Leesville, La.) was 0-3 with a walk and a run scored and had a sacrifice fly.

The Ladies drew three walks, only struck out three times, but left nine on base. Hendrix walked once, struck out once, and left four on. Six Warriors recorded multi-hit games led by three from P/1B Kelsey Sample who also drove in two runs. C Kinsey Bryant had a game-high three RBI with a pair of hits. Hendrix committed two errors and the Ladies committed one.  

Senior P Ashley Hunter (Benton, La.) started for the Ladies and lasted just 2.1 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits. She threw 52 pitches, 29 for strikes, and faced 12 batters. Freshman P Anna Scarbock (Alexandria, La.) relieved Hunter and suffered the loss as she gave up three earned runs and nine hits in four innings. She did not walk or strike out a batter. She threw 64 pitches (45 strikes) and faced 21 batters.

Sample started for the Warriors and went five innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits with two walks and two K's. She hit one batter, threw 80 total pitches (46 strikes), and faced 25 batters. Skyler Teague relieved Sample and pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Hailey Johnston (1-0) finished the game and picked up the win as she allowed a hit in 2/3 of an inning. She faced four batters and threw 15 pitches, 10 for strikes.

Bryant started the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 Hendrix lead but the Ladies scored single runs in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead. Dominguez drove Akers home with an RBI double in the second and an inning later, Lewis delivered her sac fly to score Stout. After Hendrix scored three runs in the third, Cox smacked a two-out, two-run double to tie the game at 4-4. Sample's two-run double made it 6-4 Hendrix in the bottom of the sixth but Dickey's sac fly and an RBI single by freshman Brooke Sandefur (Baton Rouge, La.) tied the game. LF Kendyl Patton then singled with the bases loaded and one out to score Johnston with the winning run.
