Ladies Fall 3-1 At Southwestern On Sunday

Georgetown, Texas- The Centenary softball team fell 3-1 on Sunday in the rubber game of its three-game weekend series in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play to the Southwestern University Pirates at Taylor-Sanders Field.

The Ladies (10-15, 4-11 SCAC) and Pirates (10-22, 5-10 SCAC) split a doubleheader on Saturday after Southwestern took game one 1-0 and then Centenary responded with a 3-2 win in nine innings.

The Maroon and White entered the series as one of the top hitting clubs in the conference but struggled in the series as the Ladies scored just four runs in the series on 11 hits. Centenary's pitching was strong all weekend, though, as the Ladies allowed just six earned runs and tossed one complete game.

The Pirates finished with three runs on 11 hits while the Ladies had three hits. Each team scored a run in the first inning and then the Pirates scored a pair in the fifth. Senior P Ashley Hunter (Benton, La.) suffered the loss for the Ladies to fall to 3-2 on the season as she went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs, all earned, and nine hits with two walks and a strikeouts. She faced 23 batters and threw 72 pitches, 48 for strikes. Freshman P Katelyn Moss (Olive Branch, Miss.) relieved her and went the final 1.1 innings and allowed two hits with one strikeout. Moss threw 17 pitches (10 strikes), faced six batters and hit one.

Paige Rasmussen started for the Pirates and went four innings as she received a no-decision, allowing one unearned run and two hits with two walks and four K's. She threw 59 pitches, 34 for strikes, and faced 17 batters. Taylor McKenzie relieved Rasmussen and got the win to improve to 5-9 as she went the final three innings and allowed a hit with two walks and five K's. She faced 11 batters and threw 44 pitches (27 strikes).

Freshman 3B Viviana Rivero (Redondo Beach, Calif.) singled home sophomore RF Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.) for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and CF Erica Otto drove in DP Jodi Millhouse to tie the game in the bottom half. Three scoreless innings followed until the Pirates scored a pair in the fifth as 2B Maddie Mefford hit a two-run homer with two outs to break the tie.

The Ladies struck out nine times, drew four walks, and left so on base. The Pirates struck out twice, walked twice, and left eight on base. Four Southwestern players recorded two hits or more led by three from Millhouse.

The Ladies return home next weekend for their final home series of the regular season as they will face Schreiner in a doubleheader on Friday at 2 and 4 p.m. followed by their annual Senior Day game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
