Ladies Fall At Southwestern On Friday, 58-49

Georgetown, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team hung tough with the Southwestern University Pirates on Friday night before falling 58-49 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Robertson Center.

The Ladies (4-19, 2-13 SCAC) snapped their 12-game losing streak last Sunday with a 61-53 victory over St. Thomas in the Gold Dome on Senior Day but fell to 2-9 on the road this season. The Pirates improved to 10-13 overall and 3-12 in SCAC play with the win and swept the season series after recording a 76-63 win over the Ladies in Shreveport back on Jan. 12.

Three Ladies reached double figures on Friday, led by 15 from sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.). She was 5-13 from the floor, 3-6 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 from the free throw line. Tremie has now reached double figures 14 times this season, nine times in league play, and done so six games in a row. She also played all 40 minutes on Friday, doing so for the seventh time this season and fifth time in conference play.

Freshman G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) scored a career-high 14 points on 7-14 shooting overall in 28 minutes off the bench. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, blocked a pair of shots, and had two steals. Drumgo's previous career high of 11 was interestingly in the Ladies' previous meeting with the Pirates last month and she has now reached double figures three times this season.

Freshman G Alana Jones (Shreveport) scored two points, grabbed five boards, had three assists, and blocked a shot in 28 minutes. Junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) played 13 minutes and scored two points.

The Ladies shot 32.8 % (21-64) overall from the floor, 31.3 % (5-16) from beyond the arc, and shot only six free throws all night, making two. Southwestern did not shoot much better overall, finishing 33.3 % (19-57). The Pirates were 6-21 (28.6 %) from 3-point range and were solid at the free throw line, making 14-18 for 77.8 %. Southwestern won the rebounding battle, 47-37, with 32 coming on the defensive end.

The Pirates finished with a slight edge (12-10) in points in the paint and had 12 second-chance points to the Ladies' seven. Centenary's bench outscored the Southwestern bench 16-11. The Pirates turned the ball over 14 times while the Ladies took good care of the ball, committing only nine turnovers. Centenary scored 16 points off of the Pirates' 14 giveaways while Southwestern only scored six off the Ladies' nine miscues.

Southwestern had three players score in double figures led by a game-high 18 from Ellie Ward. Jada Hollie scored 12 and Taylor Carney chipped in 11. Lauren Fulenwider, who entered the game as the Pirates' top scorer and ranked seventh in the league at 13.0 PPG, was held to just two points on 0-13 shooting overall and missed all 10 of her 3-point attempts. She went 2-2 from the free throw line and had four assists and a rebound. Fulenwider poured in 32 points and a conference single-game record ten 3-point baskets in the previous meeting between the two teams last month.

Kaitlyn Atkinson scored six points off the bench, the conference's top rebounder, Princess Roberts, grabbed eight rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench and scored three points. Reece Sandercock pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in 32 minutes with four points, four blocked shots, an assist, and a steal.

The Pirates led 22-13 after the first quarter and then the Ladies edged them 15-14 in the second period as Southwestern took a 36-28 lead into halftime. The Ladies then outscored the Pirates 14-11 in the third period to cut the lead to 47-42 headed to the final quarter, but Southwestern held Centenary to only seven points in the final 10 minutes while only scoring 11 but it was enough to hold on for the nine-point win. The Ladies have now lost six games this season by single digits, displaying the grit and fight they have played with all season.

The Ladies will wrap up their regular season on Saturday as they face the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in Seguin, Texas at 4 p.m.
