Ladies Come Up Short In Regular-Season Finale At Texas Lutheran

Seguin, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team hung tough with the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in its regular-season finale before falling 62-53 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play inside Memorial Gymnasium.

The Ladies finish their season at 4-20 overall and 2-14 in conference play while TLU improved to 16-8 overall and 13-3 in SCAC play. Centenary came up short to Southwestern on Friday evening, 58-49, in Georgetown, Texas and finished the season 2-10 on the road. Centenary did snap a 12-game losing streak last Sunday at home on Senior Day with a 61-53 victory over St. Thomas in the Gold Dome, winning its Senior Day game for the third-straight season.

Centenary shot well overall from the floor on Saturday, finishing at 43.5 % (20-46) while TLU shot just 33.9 % (20-59). The Ladies finished just 3-17 (17.6 %) from beyond the arc and 10-17 at the free throw line for 58.8 %. The Bulldogs were 7-24 (29.2 %) from 3-point range and 15-22 (68.2 %) from the free throw line. The Ladies finished with a slight edge, 37-35, in rebounding.

The Ladies recorded 11 assists, five steals, and blocked three shots. The Bulldogs had 15 assists and 10 steals but did not block any shots. TLU turned the ball over 12 times and Centenary gave it away 20 times. The Bulldogs finished with a 20-16 edge in points in the paint and scored 13 second-chance points to the Ladies' six. TLU scored 16 points off of Centenary's 20 turnovers and the Maroon and White scored 12. The Bulldogs' bench contributed 29 points and the Ladies' chipped in 19.

TLU led 14-10 after the first quarter and 27-21 at the half. The Ladies finished with a 15-12 edge in the third quarter but the Bulldogs outscored the Ladies by six (23-17) in the final period to secure the win. Three Ladies scored in double figures on Saturday led by 13 from freshman G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) after she scored a career-high 14 points in the loss at Southwestern on Friday. Drumgo played 29 minutes and was 5-8 overall from the floor and 3-4 from the free throw line. She had two rebounds and reached double figures for the fourth time this season.

Sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) scored 11 in 38 minutes on 4-14 shooting. She was three treys and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She also recorded two assists, one steal, and one blocked shot as she reached double figures for the 15th time this season, 10 times in league play, and did so for the seventh-consecutive game to end the season. Junior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored 10 in 20 minutes off the bench with three rebounds, an assist, and a blocked shot. She was 5-8 overall from the floor and scored in double figures for the fourth time this season.

Junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) scored nine points, grabbed four boards, and had two assists and two steals in 14 minutes off the bench on 3-4 shooting overall and went 3-5 from the free throw line. Freshman G Alana Jones (Shreveport) scored five points and pulled down five rebounds in 23 minutes. She was 2-5 from the floor, 1-2 at the free throw line, and had two assists and a blocked shot.

Senior G Jennae Mayberry (Clovis, Calif.) was held scoreless but grabbed two rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Freshman G Mary Leday (Opelousas, La.) played 26 minutes and scored five points with four assists, two steals, and one rebound. She shot 1-5 overall but 4-4 at the free throw line. Morgan Rodriguez led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points. Jenesis Navarro and Kailee Mulkey each had 10. Tansye Moehrig grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Five other Bulldogs scored at least three points.

The Ladies were down 27-16 with 2:25 left before the half but went on a 5-0 run and held the Bulldogs scoreless to cut it to 27-21 at intermission and then with just 1:53 remaining in the third quarter a jumper by Alana Jones made it a 37-34 game and Centenary trailed by just three (39-36) headed to the fourth quarter. A basket by Jazzmyn Jones cut the Bulldogs' lead to just one (41-40) at the 8:23 mark but that was as close as the Ladies would get as TLU was able to build on the lead and close out the win.
