
Baseball Set For Challenging Weekend At Nationally-Ranked Trinity
The Centenary baseball team is back on the road this weekend for another critical Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against the nationally-ranked Trinity University Tigers beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Baseball Field.

The series between the Diamond Gents (14-16, 10-11 SCAC) and No. 10 Tigers (23-7, 18-3 SCAC) concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader set for 1 p.m.

The Diamond Gents swept Southwestern University on the road last weekend in league play, sweeping a DH last Friday as they won game one by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings and then took game two 9-6. Centenary polished off the series sweep on Saturday with an 8-7 victory.
The Diamond Gents have won a season-high four games in a row and improved to 5-5 on the road while they have now won seven in a row against the Pirates and have dominated the recent series, winning 13 of the last 14. Trinity, who won two of three at home last weekend against Schreiner University, is ranked 10th in both the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll and the ABCA Coaches Poll and are atop the conference standings.
Centenary, fighting to get into next month's SCAC Tournament, is sixth in the conference standings and four games behind McMurry, who is in fourth. Trinity leads Concordia University by two games in the race for the regular season crown. The top four teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season will earn a berth in the 2025 SCAC Baseball Tournament held May 2-4 at Dell Diamond Park in Round Rock, Texas.
Centenary is hitting .262 as a team with a with a .368 OBP and slugging percentage of .339. The Diamond Gents have hit eight home runs and collected 254 hits of which 53 are extra-base hits. Centenary's pitching staff has a 5.29 ERA, allowing 198 runs (152 earned) and 272 hits in 258.2 IP with 192 strikeouts.
This weekend is another meeting between two of the conference's powerhouse programs. Centenary was picked to finish third in the league this season in the preseason coaches' poll while Trinity was tabbed as the favorite to take home the 2025 title. The Diamond Gents, the defending SCAC Tournament champions, also won titles in 2022 and 2017. Trinity won four-straight titles (2013-16) and then won in 2019 and 2023.
Senior LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) is in the midst of an outstanding season for the Diamond Gents as he is ranked in the top five in the conference in ERA (2.93) and innings pitched (55.1) and he is second in the conference in strikeouts (50) which ranks in the top 35 nationally in division III. Herrera is 4-2 in nine appearances (all starts) with one complete game and has allowed just 18 earned runs and 18 walks along with 56 hits this season.
Freshman P Tony Barcelona V (Pearland, Texas) has had an impressive rookie season on the mound as he is 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA in 10 appearances. He shined in his first start of the season last Saturday against Southwestern, working a season-high seven innings and limited the Pirates to two earned runs and five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He faced 30 batters and threw 99 pitches (57 strikes).
Junior RHP Jacob Broussard (Houston, Texas) picked up his first win of the season last Friday in relief of Herrera as he went 3.1 innings and blanked the Pirates on two hits with three BB and one K. Freshman P/IF Treyson Martin (Huffman, Texas) picked up a pair of saves over the weekend as he worked a total of 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits with three BB and three K's.
Sophomore 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) has followed up his superb rookie season in which he was named the SCAC Freshman of the Year and earned Second-Team All-SCAC honors with an impressive second season as he is hitting .325 in 30 games and 114 at-bats.
Miller has a .402 OBP and is slugging .474 with a team-leading 20 RBI. He has belted a pair of home runs along with nine doubles and a triple. He has a team-high 37 hits, has scored 20 runs, and has drawn 12 walks while only striking out 12 times. Miller has been hit by a pitch four times, has a pair of sacrifice flies, and seven stolen bases in eight attempts. He has 14 multi-hit games this season which includes two 3-hit performances.
Freshman IF Noah Paulson (El Lago, Texas) and freshman OF Blaine Birkelbach (Pearland, Texas) are each hitting over .300, and freshman LF Brody Hebert (Houma, La.) and senior SS Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) are tied for the team lead with three home runs each. Paulson is hitting .312 with 24 hits, 14 runs scored, and 12 RBI while Birkelbach is batting .310 with 27 hits, 16 runs, and 12 RBI.
Hebert is batting .245 with 12 hits, 12 runs, and 10 RBI and Boone is hitting .243 with 26 hits, 24 runs, 18 RBI, three doubles, and a triple. Sophomore C/IF Miles Keith (Lindale, Texas) is hitting .284 (.366 OBP/.3407 slugging) with 23 hits, 16 RBI, a team-best 10 doubles, and 12 runs scored. Keith had a big weekend against Southwestern as he went 5-10 (.500) at the plate with a double and two runs scored.
Freshman IF Aron Gillum (Shreveport, La.) is hitting .283 (.374 OBP/.309 slugging) with 30 hits, 17 runs, two doubles, 11 RBI, 12 BB, and six stolen bases, junior IF Clay Menard (Berwick, La.) is hitting .241 with 14 hits, 10 runs scored, eight RBI, and a team-leading 17 BB, and sophomore UT Gage Morris (Livingston, Texas) is batting .256 with 10 hits, 10 runs, and five RBI.
