Amato's Late Game-Winning Goal Gives Gents 2-1 Comeback Win Over McMurry

Shreveport - The Centenary men's soccer team edged McMurry University 2-1 on Sunday afternoon as the Gents recorded a thrilling comeback win over the War Hawks in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Atkins Field.
The Gents (7-6-1, 3-4 SCAC) shook off a disappointing 3-2 loss on Friday night against Concordia University to notch an important victory over the War Hawks (3-10-1, 1-6-0 SCAC).
McMurry scored first and held a 1-0 lead at halftime as Diego Aldama's first goal of the season came at the 33:04 mark of the first half as Herbie Martinez assisted. Centenary wasted no time in tying the match after halftime as freshman F Nathan Uduojie (Houston, Texas) found the net 1:55 into the second half, scoring his sixth goal of the season, with freshman MF Hayden Hughes (Dallas, Texas) assisting- his fourth of the season.
Senior MF Brennan Amato (Denham Springs, La.) then completed the comeback as he scored a late goal, finding the net in the 87th minute to make it 2-1 with Uduojie assisting. The goal was Amato's fourth of the season and he scored for the second match in a row after tallying the tying goal in Friday's loss. Amato now has two game-winning goals this season.
Centenary freshman GK Sebastian Lutin (Fort Worth, Texas) went the distance in goal and made six saves and McMurry GK Brandon Walker also played all 90 minutes and made one save.
McMurry finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots and had seven shots on goal while Centenary had three. The War Hawks finished with a 2-1 edge in corner kicks and the teams were whistled for 29 fouls – 17 by the Gents and 12 by the War Hawks and three yellow cards were issued.
The Gents are in a tie for eighth place in the conference standings with the University of the Ozarks but just 1.5 games behind both Texas Lutheran and Southwestern University (tied for 6th place) as the Bulldogs and Pirates are each 2-2-3 in SCAC play. The University of St. Thomas is in fourth place (3-2-2) and Austin College is fifth at 3-3-1.
The 2024 SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament will be return to SaberCats Stadium in Houston, Texas - marking the second consecutive year the venue will serve as host of the league's postseason championship event. Semifinal matches are scheduled for Friday, November 8 will the championship match contested on Sunday, November 10. The top four teams in the SCAC standings at the conclusion of the regular season will make the tournament.
