Shreveport – The Centenary men's soccer team has been selected as Centenary Athletics' "Team of the Week" after the Gents recorded a pair of impressive home wins over the weekend and made history in the process.
The Gents (3-1-1) set a division III program era record for goals in a game with a 9-0 blowout victory over the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) Owls on Friday night in a non-conference contest at Atkins Field and continued their hot play with a 3-0 win on Sunday against the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers.
The Gents raced out to a 5-0 lead at halftime on Friday and added four more goals in the second half over the Owls to coast to the win. Prior to Centenary's performance against MUW, the previous record for goals in a game was set in a 7-0 win over Hendrix College on Sept. 24, 2019.
Freshman F Nathan Uduojie (Houston, Texas) recorded a hat trick for the Gents on Friday as he scored the first two goals of the match for the Maroon and White in the ninth and 14th minutes of the first half and added a third just 36 seconds after halftime for a 6-0 lead. Uduojie, who also tallied an assist on the Gents' third goal of the night, becomes only the third Gent to score three goals in a game in the D3 era as he joins Wil Escobar in 2019 and Nick Hammond in 2017 in doing so.
Senior F Gabriel Aragon (Forney, Texas) scored a pair of goals and added an assist as he found the net for the first two times in his career. Aragon is the 14th Centenary player, along with Uduojie, to score at least two goals in a match in the D3 era.
Senior F Ron Masti (Houston, Texas) scored the Gents' fourth goal of the match, assisted by Aragon, at the 37:14 mark of the first half as Masti recorded his first goal of the season and ninth of his career. Sophomore F Carter Webb (Flower Mound, Texas) made it 3-0 Gents at the 16:16 mark of the first period with Uduojie assisting as Carter scored his first goal of the season.
Freshman MF Kevin Huskey Jr. (Dallas, Texas) became the third Gents on the night to record a multi-goal performance as he scored in the 69th and 84th minutes, tallying the Gents' seventh and ninth goals of the match. He now has three goals this season after scoring his first on Sept. 1 against Piedmont.
Junior MF Brandon Guevara (Henderson, Texas), junior F Eoin Hamill (Belfast, Ireland), freshman MF Hayden Hughes (Dallas, Texas), freshman MF Emiliano Mondragon (Dallas, Texas), and senior D Christopher Tarr (Durban, South Africa) all recorded assists for the Gents as seven different players notched at least one.
Mondragon had a pair of assists as he joins seven others to tally two assists in a match in the D3 era. All but one of the Gents' nine goals was assisted as the eight assists sets a new D3-era record for assists in a match and the 26 points in the match is also a new D-3 era record for points in a match.
Centenary set the tone early on Sunday afternoon against OBU, as the Gents scored a goal just 51 seconds into the match. Centenary and OBU, a division II program, were meeting for the first time since 2005 and the Gents are now 5-0 all-time against the Tigers. The Gents are 5-4-2 in their last 11 home matches.
Senior MF Brennan Amato (Denham Springs, La.) found the net just under a minute into the match with freshman MF Emiliano Mondragon (Dallas, Texas) tallying the assist as the Gents wasted no time in taking the lead. Senior MF Hunter Booth (Harrodsburg, Ky.) then made it 2-0 in the 28th minute on an unassisted goal. Booth is now tied for the team lead in goals this season with three and has scored six in his career.
Masti scored in the 33rd minute to make it 3-0, the Gents' final goal of the match, with freshman MF Kevin Huskey Jr. (Dallas, Texas) picking up the assist. Masti scored for the second match in a row and now has 10-career goals.
Freshman GK Sebastian Lutin (Fort Worth, Texas) started for the Gents and went the distance, making four saves. Lutin, in his fourth start of the season, recorded his first-career shutout.
The Gents hit the road for a pair of non-conference matches next week with the first being a matchup with the University of Texas at Dallas (another division II opponent) on Sept. 19 and at East Texas Baptist University on Sept. 21 in Marshall, Texas.
