Ladies Fall At Wiley Tuesday Night

Marshall, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 86-40 to the Wiley College Lady Wildcats on Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Ladies (0-9) were making their first visit to Marshall since Feb. 13, 1984 and lost to Wiley (7-2) for the second time this season after falling at home by a score of 84-75 on Nov. 17.

Freshman G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Ladies with 10 points and was the only Centenary player to reach double figures. Barrow, who scored a season-high 16 points in Sunday's 102-101 loss to Birmingham-Southern College, recorded her third double-digit scoring game of the season. Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored seven points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds with an assist and a blocked shot.

Barrow was 3-7 from the floor in 21 minutes and finished 4-6 at the free throw line. She recorded five rebounds and had one assist. Bagwell was 3-6 from the floor in 24 minutes and was 1-2 from the free throw line. Sophomore G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) added five points and five rebounds in only 16 minutes. She was 2-2 from the free throw line with a blocked shot and a steal.

Freshman G Brailey Major (Opelousas, La.) scored four points and grabbed six rebounds in 33 minutes on 2-8 shooting with three assists and two steals. Freshman G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) also scored four and had two steals in 25 minutes and was 2-4 from the free throw line. Freshman G Keyonna Armelin (New Iberia, La.) came off the bench and played 12 minutes and scored four points and had two assists and one rebound.

Senior G Patience Bates (Houston, Texas) scored a season-best four points with five rebounds in 18 minutes on 2-5 shooting with one assist. Freshman G Olivia Sepulvado (Zwolle, La.) scored two points and grabbed four rebounds in 31 minutes with two steals, an assist, and one blocked shot.

The Ladies shot 29.4 % (15-51) from the floor and finished 9-16 from the free throw line for 56.3 %. Centenary attempted only eight 3-pointers in the game and hit one for 12.5 %. Wiley was 41.3 % (31-75), 20-29 from the free throw line for 69 %, and 4-19 from beyond the arc for 21.1 %. Wiley finished with a 50-37 edge in rebounding and forced the Ladies into 35 turnovers. The Lady Wildcats took care of the ball fairly well, only committing 14 turnovers and had 18 assists, 18 steals, and three blocked shots. Centenary tallied 11 assists, 10 steals, and had three blocked shots.

Kayja Jackson scored a game-high 21 points to lead four Wiley players in double figures. Alaeh Pressley scored 14, Kaitlyn Dais had 11, and Tamia Dolls scored 10. Minnie Miller grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and added eight points with two assists, two blocked shots, and two steals. Davis had seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals to go with her 11 points. Diamond Hawthorne scored nine, Ashunti Cooper scored six, Jay'lann Myles added three, and Kiersten Harris and Kewaysha Alsup each chipped in two.

Wiley took a commanding 24-5 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Ladies 27-11 to take a 51-16 halftime lead. The Ladies edged the Lady Wildcats 18-15 in the third quarter and Wiley finished the Ladies off with a 20-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Wiley finished with 44 points in the paint to Centenary's 16 and scored 48 points off turnovers while the Ladies only scored seven. Wiley's bench contributed 34 points while Centenary's scored 10. The Lady Wildcats finished with 22 second-chance points while the Ladies had three and Wiley tallied 14 fast-break points while Centenary had two.

The Ladies will turn their focus to conference play as they will welcome both Trinity and Schreiner to town this weekend. Centenary will face the Tigers on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the Mountaineers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
