Ladies Fall At Top-Ranked Trinity On Friday Night

San Antonio, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 96-46 to the top-ranked Trinity University Tigers in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at the Ron & Genie Calgaard Gymnasium.

The Ladies (1-17, 1-8 SCAC) will look to rebound on Saturday at Schreiner in another conference game set for 2 p.m. in Kerrville, Texas. The Tigers, ranked first in the D3hoops.com NCAA III poll this week, remained undefeated at 18-0, 9-0 SCAC. Trinity swept the season series after winning the first meeting with the Ladies, 100-42 last month in Shreveport.

Freshman G Brailey Major (Opelousas, La.) led the Ladies in scoring with 11 points and sophomore G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) joined her in double figures with 10. Major reached double figures for the fourth time this season with three coming in conference play. She was 4-15 from the floor in 30 minutes with a team-best eight rebounds and added one steal.

Drumgo came off the bench and played 19 minutes as she was 4-8 from the floor and 2-2 from the free throw line with five rebounds and a steal. Drumgo reached double figures in scoring for the sixth time this season. Freshman G Olivia Sepulvado (Zwolle, La.) scored nine points in 20 minutes off the bench, making 2-8 shots overall with a pair of rebounds and a steal. She was 2-3 from beyond the arc and 3-4 at the FT line.

Freshman G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored five in her 29 minutes on 1-5 shooting and went 3-4 at the FT line. She grabbed five rebounds with a team-high five assists, marking the third time this season she has dished out five or more assists in a game. Freshman G Jillian Peacock (West Monroe, La.) added four points in 14 minutes and grabbed four rebounds. She added three steals and two assists and was 2-3 from the floor.

Sophomore G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) was held to just three points in 23 minutes as she was 0-2 from the floor but went 3-4 at the FT line with two assists, two steals, and one rebound. Freshman F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) and senior G Patience Bates (Houston, Texas) each scored two points. Stokes grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes as she was 1-8 from the floor with a blocked shot and a steal. Bates had two rebounds and an assist in eight minutes of action.

Freshman G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) was held scoreless in her 22 minutes of action but had one assist. Freshman G Lauren Castillo (Keller, Texas) played nine minutes and had one steal but also did not score. Three Ladies – junior G Tamera Alexander (Breaux Bridge, La.), junior G Tamia Alexander (Breaux Bridge, La.), and freshman F Makalyn Savoy (Opelousas, La.) made their season debut on Friday. None of the three scored but Savoy grabbed a pair of rebounds in three minutes.

Five Tigers reached double figures, led by 16 apiece from Ashlyn Milton and Josie Napoli. Maggie Shipley scored 12, Addie Putnam added 11 and Claire Hale scored 10. Twelve players in all scored for Trinity and eight Tigers scored at least five points. The Tigers shot 42.3 % (33-78) from the floor for the game while the Ladies were 15-55 for 27.3 %. Both teams struggled from 3-point range, as Trinity made just 12-42 attempts for 28.6 % and Centenary went 3-14 for 21.4 %. The Ladies were strong at the FT line, finishing 13-18 for 72.2 % and the Tigers went 18-26 for 69.2 %. Trinity won the rebounding battle, 48-41, and forced the Ladies into a season-high 42 turnovers. The Tigers gave it away 23 times themselves.

The Ladies finished with 11 assists, 10 steals, and one blocked shot while the Tigers tallied 26 assists, 26 steals, and blocked four shots. Trinity finished with a 38-22 edge in points in the paint and scored a whopping 53 points off of turnovers to the Ladies' 11. The Tigers also had a sizeable advantage in fast break points (31-8), and second-chance points (22-8), and their bench outscored the Ladies' bench 34-25.

Trinity raced out to a 30-5 advantage after the first quarter but the Ladies played much better in the second period, scoring 11 points and holding Trinity to 14. A strong third quarter (35-8) turned a 44-16 halftime lead into a 79-24 lead headed into the final 10 minutes. The Ladies, though, finished strong by outscoring the Tigers 22-17 in the final quarter.
