Gents Fall In Home Opener To Huntingdon On Saturday, 18-12

Shreveport- The Centenary lacrosse team fell 18-12 to the Huntingdon College Hawks in its home opener on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Mayo Field.

The Gents (0-3) were led by a five-goal effort from sophomore A G'Colby Spivey (Dallas, Texas), but it was not enough to match the Hawks (2-2) who had five players scored multiple goals each and were led by five from Gage Kettlewell.

Freshman M Ethan Hewett (Bossier City, La.) recorded a hat trick for the first three goals of his career and senior A/MF Mark Temple (Houston, Texas) also scored three. Senior M Jordan Cook (Bryant, Ark.) added one goal for the Gents. Hewett also added one assist and sophomore MF Dominic Ogier (St. Louis, Mo.) had one. Tristan Dial and Caden Bacz each scored three for Huntingdon, Kelcey Marston and Brady Moulton each scored a pair, and three Hawks scored a goal each.

Junior Dylan Miller (Shreveport, La.) started in goal for the Gents as he made his season debut and went the distance as he recorded 16 saves while Hawks' GK Jesse "Blake" Thomas also played all 60 minutes and made seven saves.

The Hawks took 50 shots while the Gents finished with 39, Huntingdon had a 23-19 edge in ground balls, and each team won 14 faceoffs. The Gents turned the ball over 16 times and the Hawks gave it away 10 times. Centenary was 14-23 on clears and Huntingdon was 8-13.

Moulton's goal gave the Hawks a lead with 9:58 left in the first quarter and Cook tied the game at the 8:16 mark. Spivey gave the Gents a 2-1 lead with 5:56 remaining in the quarter and Dial tied the score at 2-2 just 55 seconds before the end of the period.

The Hawks edged the Gents 3-2 in the second period to take a 5-4 halftime lead. Huntingdon then seized control of the game after the half, outscoring Centenary 8-2 in the third to take a 13-6 lead into the final quarter. The Gents scored six times in the final 10 minutes, but the Hawks scored five to seal the win. Spivey scored three of his goals in the fourth period.

The Gents will hit the road for a pair of games this weekend, starting with a matchup versus the Hanover College Panthers in Hanover, Ind. on Friday set for 1 p.m. (Noon central time). Centenary then faces Spalding University on Sunday in Louisville, Ky. at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. central time).
