Ladies Defeat Hendrix For First Win Of Season

Jackson, Miss. - The Centenary women's basketball team recorded its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Ladies defeated the Hendrix College Warriors by a score of 80-69 on day one of the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic inside the Hangar Dome.

The Ladies (1-4) will finish their weekend on Sunday against the host Majors (4-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m. Hendrix fell to 1-3 with the loss.

Centenary had its best offensive game of the young season, shooting 41.3 % (26-63) from the floor for the game, 34.8 % (8-23) from beyond the arc, and 76.9 % (20-26) from the free throw line. The Ladies' 80 points are a season best and they also posted their best FG %, FT %, and had their most made 3-point baskets in a game. The Ladies also won a close rebounding battle, 38-37, and finished with 11 assists, six steals, and three blocked shots.

Hendrix finished 32.8 % (19-58) from the floor for the game, just 25 % (6-24) from beyond the arc, and 71.4 % (25-35) from the FT line. The Warriors totaled seven assists, nine steals, and three blocked shots. Each team turned the ball over 21 times. The Ladies scored 32 points in the paint compared to 24 for the Warriors, finished with 10 second-chance points while the Warriors scored 10, and the Maroon and White finished with a decisive advantage in fast break points (17-3). The Warriors scored 27 points off of turnovers, the Ladies scored 21, and Hendrix finished with a 29-18 edge in bench points.

Sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) led the way on offense as she scored a career-high 23 points and was one of four Centenary players to reach double figures. She recorded her second-career 20-point game and reached double figures for the fifth time. Plumber was 8-18 from the floor in 38 minutes and went 6-15 from beyond the arc with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored 13 in her 31 minutes on 3-8 shooting. Barrow, the Ladies' leading scorer this season entering the weekend, was 1-2 from beyond the arc and 6-6 at the FT line. She had five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Junior G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) and sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) each scored 11.

Freshman G Mallory Dougharty (Evadale, Texas) had a team-high 10 rebounds and scored eight points in 23 minutes. She was 2-7 from the floor and a perfect 4-4 at the FT line with three assists, a blocked shot, and a steal. Jones added five rebounds, an assist, and a blocked shot on 5-8 shooting and was 1-1 at the FT line in 23 minutes. Powell was 3-10 from the floor, 1-4 from 3-point range, and 4-5 from the FT line in 30 minutes with for rebounds and a steal.

Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in 24 minutes on 3-8 shooting and was 1-2 from the FT line. Sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) scored four points in 14 minutes off the bench on 2-3 shooting with three rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot, and a steal. Sophomore G Lauren Castillo (Fort Worth, Texas) scored three points as she was 3-4 at the FT line with two rebounds in six minutes and sophomore G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) was held scoreless in 11 minutes but had an assist before fouling out of the game.

Five Hendrix players reached double figures, led by 14 from Riley Brady and she added a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. She played 23 minutes off the bench and was 5-8 from the floor and 4-4 from the FT line with five steals. Simone Shields, Shelby Heil, Ava Knoedl, and Megan Gray each scored 10 points.

The Ladies were ahead 24-16 at the end of the first quarter, but the Warriors outscored them 22-17 in the second period to make it a 41-38 lead for the Ladies at halftime. Centenary finished with a 20-11 advantage in the third quarter to extend its lead to 61-49 entering the final 10 minutes. The Warriors edged the Ladies, 20-19, in the fourth quarter but the double-digit lead was too much to overcome as centenary sealed the win.
