Schreiner Too Much For Ladies On Friday

Kerrville, Texas- The Centenary women's basketball team lost to the Schreiner University Mountaineers by a score of 103-53 on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Stephens Family Arena.

The Ladies (1-14, 0-7 SCAC) finish their weekend road trip on Saturday evening versus the Trinity University Tigers (11-5, 6-1 SCAC) in San Antonio in a game set for 6 p.m. The Tigers defeated the University of St. Thomas Celts on Friday. Schreiner improved to 4-12 overall and 3-4 in SCAC play with the win as the Mountaineers snapped their five-game losing streak and evened their home record this season to 2-2.

Both teams started off hot on offense, especially the Ladies as they shot 50 % (7-14) from the floor in the first quarter, 3-4 (75 %) from beyond the arc, and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Schreiner was 9-22 for 40.9 % and went 4-9 from 3-point range and 5-7 from the FT line and held a 27-21 lead.

Schreiner continued to shoot the ball well in the second period, finishing 47.1 %, while the Ladies struggled, making just 2 of 14 attempts for 14.3 % and were outscored 25-13 to trail 52-34 at halftime. The Mountaineers then extended their lead further following a 23-7 advantage in the third quarter and outscored the Ladies 28-12 in the final period.

Centenary finished just 27.1 % (16-59) from the floor for the game while Schreiner finished an even 50 % (37-74). The Ladies went 6-21 from beyond the arc for 28.6 % and 15-20 at the FT line for 75 %. The Mountaineers finished 10-27 (37 %) from beyond the arc and 19-24 at the FT line for 79.2 %. The Mountaineers won the rebounding battle, 48-28, and forced the Ladies into 29 turnovers while giving it away 15 times themselves. Schreiner scored a whopping 40 points off of the Ladies' TO's while Centenary scored nine points off Schreiner's miscues.

The Mountaineers dominated in the paint, outscoring the Ladies 48-14, and had 16 fast break points to none for the Ladies. Schreiner outscored Centenary in bench points 55-18 and scored 14 second-chance points while the Ladies scored nine.

Sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) led the Ladies with 14 points as she played 33 minutes and was 4-9 from beyond the arc and 5-20 overall with six rebounds, and a steal as she has now scored in double figures eight times this season and done so in five-straight games. Sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) joined her in double figures with 10 points as she was 2-5 from the floor in 22 minutes with six rebounds and a steal. Stokes has reached double figures four times this season and finished 6-8 at the FT line.

Sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) was held to just five points but grabbed a season-high tying 10 rebounds and was 2-5 from the floor and 1-1 from beyond the arc in 39 minutes with a team-high five assists. Barrow entered the game as the Ladies' leading scorer this season (12.3 PPG) and ranked seventh in the conference. She has reached double figures 10 times this season and tallied at least five assists in a game for the third time this season.

Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) returned from an injury that has kept her sidelined most of the season to score seven points on 3-6 shooting in 23 minutes. She was 1-2 at the FT line with one rebound and one blocked shot as she was in action for the first time since November.

Sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) and freshman G Mallory Dougharty (Evadale, Texas) each scored six points and freshman G Kira Latson (Pearland, Texas) scored a season-best five points in 11 minutes off the bench. Sophomore G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) was held scoreless but had an assist and a rebound in her 12 minutes. Powell was 2-9 overall and 2-2 at the FT line in 25 minutes with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and Dougharty was 1-10 overall, 1-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-4 at the FT line in her 35 minutes with five boards, two assists, and two steals.

Five Schreiner players reached double figures, led by a game-high 20 points from Demauria Miles. Tresalyn Roberts scored 12, Tianna Murray had 11, and Brie Sosa and Kaycie Willis each scored 10.
