
Ladies Fall To McNeese State In Exhibition Contest
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 93-46 in an exhibition contest against the McNeese State University Cowgirls on Thursday evening at the Legacy Center.
Lake Charles, La. - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 93-46 in an exhibition contest against the McNeese State University Cowgirls on Thursday evening at the Legacy Center.
The Ladies took a break from regular season and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with their second exhibition game of the season after previously falling at home to LSUS, 88-48, last month.
The Ladies fell behind 24-2 after the first quarter but finished even (15-15) in the second quarter with the Cowgirls to make it a 39-17 game at halftime. McNeese outscored Centenary 27-8 in the third quarter and 27-8 in the fourth to secure the win.
Centenary shot just 22.4 % (11-49) from the floor for the game, 4-22 from beyond the arc for 18.2 % and 20-38 at the free throw line for 52.6 %. McNeese shot 44.2 % (34-77) from the floor, 41.2 % (7-17) from 3-point range, and 18-27 from the FT line for 66.7 %.
The Cowgirls outrebounded the Ladies 53-40 and outscored them in the paint, 52-10. Centenary finished with five assists, four steals, one blocked shot, eight points off of turnovers, two second-chance points, eight fast break points, and nine bench points. McNeese had 23 assists, 17 steals, four blocked shots, scored 36 points off of turnovers, 20 second-chance points, 12 fast break points, and its bench scored 59 points. Centenary turned the ball over 30 times and McNeese gave it away 14 times.
Sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) led the Ladies with 13 points and added 10 rebounds for an impressive double-double while sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored 10 and grabbed eight rebounds, playing all 40 minutes. Stokes was 3-8 from the floor and 7-15 at the FT line in 20 minutes and Barrow was 4-9 overall, 1-3 from beyond the arc, and 1-3 at the FT line with an assist, a blocked shot, and a steal.
Sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) scored seven points with three assists, two steals, and a rebound in 33 minutes and sophomore G Lauren Castillo (Fort Worth, Texas) and sophomore G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) each scored five. Sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas), freshman G Kira Latson (Pearland, Texas), and freshman F Yadneli Molina (Vinton, La.) each scored two points. Freshman G Mallory Dougharty (Evadale, Texas) was held scoreless but grabbed three rebounds and had one assist.
Mireia Yespes scored a game-high 35 points and was one of four Cowgirls to reach double figures. She played 27 minutes and shot 13-17 from the floor, 2-3 from beyond the arc, and 7-9 from the FT line with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
The Ladies (1-9, 0-3 SCAC) will next be in action on Tuesday, Dec. 19 with a non-conference road contest versus the Louisiana Christian University Wildcats set for 5 p.m. in Pineville, La.
