Shreveport – Former Centenary women's soccer star Sydney Bascomb has been named an assistant coach for the program, head coach Morgan Dorsey and Director of Athletics and Recreation David Orr announced on Friday.
Bascomb finished her stellar career following the 2022 season ranked ninth all-time in the division III era (2011-present) in goals (10), tied for first in assists (9), eighth in points (29), and third in game-winning goals (5). She scored three goals in her senior season and two of those came in conference play. She was twice named all-conference in her star-studded career.
She was a three-time member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll and a Geology major who played in 66 career matches and made 62 starts. Bascomb was named to the College Sports Communicators 2022 Academic All-District ®Team, a prestigious team selected by College Sports Communicators which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
"I couldn't be more excited to bring Sydney on staff," said Dorsey. Sydney has all the tools necessary to excel in leading our student-athletes and is going to help us on a lot of different levels. She brings the ability to connect with young people, being able to mentor them and let them know what they need to do to get better but also what they need to do to achieve their ultimate goal. I know she will continue to share her knowledge and experience with our student-athletes and undoubtedly help us strive for greatness in the classroom, on the field and in the community."
Following her Centenary playing career, Bascomb has been living in Italy working on a Masters in Sports Management at Rome City Institute as well as coaching and has played professionally. She served as an assistant coach for the Empire Collegiate League [ECL] Men's King's Soccer Team, Captain of the ECL King's Women's Soccer Team, and a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Women's Academy Soccer Team.
"I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to be the Assistant Coach for the Women's Soccer program at Centenary," said Bascomb. I experienced first-hand the values, morals, and ethics upheld by the Centenary Athletics staff and I am excited to have a role in creating new positive experiences for student-athletes moving forward into the 2024 season."
"I have lived in Italy completing my education and gaining experience as a coach while playing soccer professionally. At Rome City Institute, I studied for my Masters in Sports Management and Coaching and had multiple roles within the soccer program with a wide range of talented athletes and seasoned coaches."
"In addition, I played professionally for AC Perugia Femminile Calcio in the Italian Women's Football League Serie C. While I got to build a new community on the other side of the world that allowed me to integrate my soccer passions into my daily life on a deeper level, it has only intensified my eagerness to return to the States and share my experience through coaching the best sport in the world starting with the Centenary Ladies."
The Ladies' 2024 season schedule will be announced soon.
