Ladies Drop SCAC Opener to Austin College, 63-50

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Ladies cut a 14-point deficits in both the first and second quarters to single digits, but the 'Roos scored 30 points off of 32 Maroon and White miscues as Centenary (2-9, 0-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Austin College (8-4, 1-0 SCAC) 63-50 Saturday night, December 30.

Centenary trailed 28-14 with 2:35 left until half, but 10 unanswered in less than two minutes of game time cut the deficit to four. After freshman Kayla King split from the line, the Ladies recorded a block on the defensive end and junior Savanah Doty hit a three on offense. The Maroon and White recorded a team best for this season with nine blocks - four of which came from Doty.

Down 10, it was the same verse for the Ladies as King split from the charity stripe and Doty made another three. Freshman Ethany Cosby capped the spurt with the steal and hoop with 41 seconds until halftime. Both teams traded baskets to end the half as Centenary trailed 30-26 at the break.

Doty finished the game with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting from behind the arc.

Centenary fell behind 20-6 with 2:32 left in the first quarter but scored the final six points of the period. Junior Jasmine Morris split from the line and sophomore Samantha Lyons hit the first Ladies triple of the game. Freshman Darelzray Bellard hit a jumper and sophomore Deunya Small added the block on the other end at the buzzer. Centenary trailed 20-12 after one.

The Ladies further cut into the deficit when freshman Bri Frierson scored off an offensive rebound to begin the scoring in the second quarter. Frierson, in only her fourth collegiate game, scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench for her first collegiate double-double.

Centenary cut the deficit to 32-29 on a Doty three early in the third, but 10 unanswered by the 'Roos put their advantage to double-digits the rest of the way. Bryce Frank hit a jumper and Ann Savage added the triple off an offensive rebound while being fouled for the rare four-point play. Frank hit another jumper and Savage punctuated the run with a steal and the fastbreak hoop to push the lead to 13.

Besides the 30-7 advantage in points off turnovers, Austin College used a 23-4 edge in fastbreak points.

Up 46-33, Savage made a three and a pair of free throws to increase the advantage for the visitors. Two Frank free throws put Austin College up 53-33 with 1:22 left in the third, its largest lead of the game.

Frank led Austin College with 19 points and 12 boards, while Savage contributed 14. Kacie West came off the bench with 11 and Meghan Lewis recorded 10 steals.

Centenary returns to action next Friday, January 5, when it hosts Texas Lutheran. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
