Ladies Basketball Falls to Southwestern, 62-54

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Ladies cut an 11-point, halftime deficit to two in the fourth quarter, but the Maroon and White only shot 35.3 (6-for-17) from the line as Centenary (3-10, 1-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Southwestern (5-8, 1-1 SCAC) 62-54 to finish off the weekend Sunday afternoon, January 7.

Trailing 43-30 with 7:04 left in the third, the Ladies used a 10-3 run to pull within six. Junior Savanah Doty hit a three and classmate Jasmine Morris took the defensive board coast-to-coast for the hoop and the harm. She made the ensuing free throw and Centenary was within seven.

Brooke Swift hit her own three-pointer for the Pirates, but freshman Kayla King poked the ball free and Morris picked it up for another fastbreak hoop. Morris then grabbed a defense board, threw a pass to freshman Haylee Washington to the right of the key, who passed it under the basket to King for the fastbreak score. However, Southwestern led 49-43 after three quarters.

Southwestern split from the charity stripe to begin the fourth, but two second-chance buckets by freshman Bre Frierson brought the Ladies within a possession. Morris split from the line to make it 50-48, but the Ladies climbed no closer in an eight-point loss.

Frierson finished the game with 15 points and six rebounds (five offensive), including 10 points and four rebounds on 5-for-7 shooting in the fourth quarter alone. Doty hit four triples for 12 points while Morris chipped in 12.

Centenary led 22-21 late in the second, but a 12-1 run pushed the Southwestern lead to double digits. Tori Carraway gave the visitors the lead for good on a layup before a pair of baskets inside by Cecily Woolfolk pushed the Pirates advantage to five. Freshman Darelzray Bellard split from the charity stripe for Centenary, but Carraway responded with a layup and Zhazze Brown made a pair from the line. Carraway ended the spurt with a jumper.

Carraway led Southwestern with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Brown came off the bench for 13 points - including sinking all seven free throws attempted.

Centenary returns to action Friday, January 12, for its first SCAC road game of the year. Tip-off at Dallas is slated for 7:30 p.m.
