Ladies Basketball Falls Short to #16 Trinity, 64-55

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Ladies kept pace with the Tigers in the first half and tied the game in the third quarter, but the Maroon and White fell behind as much as 18 points in the fourth as Centenary (4-14, 2-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) lost to #16 Trinity (14-2, 7-0 SCAC) 64-55 Friday night, January 26.

Trailing 22-16 in the second quarter, seven unanswered by the Ladies put Centenary back on top. Freshman Bre Frierson made a jumper off an offensive board and junior Savanah Doty drained a three. Sophomore Deunya Small made a layup off a Trinity turnover as Centenary took a one-point lead with 2:40 left in the second. Micah Weaver responded with a pair from the line and a layup to give the visitors a 26-24 lead into the break.

Centenary outrebounded Trinity 54-33 for its highest rebounding total of the season. Frierson finished the game 6-for-9 from the field with 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for her second collegiate double-double.

Centenary trailed 64-46 with two minutes left, but scored the final nine points of the game. Senior Samantha Lyons made a three and junior Jasmine Morris added a layup. Freshman Kayla King then split from the line before an old-fashioned three put the game back to single digits with nine seconds left.

Morris finished the game with 11 points while King contributed 10.

With the game tied at 28 after a Frierson putback off an offensive rebound, six unanswered by Trinity put the visitors in the lead for good. Abby Holland - who finished the game with 11 points thanks in part to a 7-for-8 mark from the free throw line - hit four free throws and Weaver added a jumper. Frierson again scored off an offensive rebound, but a three from Emily Daniel pushed the deficit to seven.

Weaver finished the game with 15 points for the Tigers.

Centenary goes for the regular season sweep of Schreiner when it hosts the Mountaineers Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
