Season High in Threes Not Enough as Ladies Fall on the Road to Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Ladies made a season best eight triples, but the Tigers built a seven-point lead in the fourth and made 5-of-6 from the line in the final 30 seconds as Centenary (3-12, 1-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) had its three-game winning streak against Colorado College (5-11, 2-3 SCAC) snapped in a 63-59 loss Sunday afternoon, January 14.

Down four halfway through the first, Centenary scored 12 unanswered and held the Tigers scoreless for more than five minutes. Freshman Darelzray Bellard made a jumper and a triple to put Centenary in the lead. Sophomore Deunya Small added a jumper, classmate Essa Badon hit her second three of the quarter, and two from the line by junior Jasmine Morris capped the spurt. The Ladies went on to lead by two at halftime.

Junior Savanah Doty made a pair of threes around a Colorado College layup to begin the second half, but six-straight by the Tiger's Evan Underbrink tied the game at 41.

Doty made four treys to lead Centenary with 12 points, while freshman Bre Frierson added 11.

Colorado College trailed 44-43 before six unanswered near the end of the third gave the home team the lead for good. Jordan Meltzer made a jumper and Underbrink scored off a putback. Meltzer added a layup before Morris split from the line for the Maroon and White to end of the third.

Both teams traded baskets to begin the fourth before McKenzee Gertz hit the only three for the Tigers in the game. The shot gave Colorado College a 54-47 lead, its largest of the game. Centenary could never cut the fourth-quarter deficit to less than two thanks in part to the Tigers making 5-of-7 free throws in the period.

Casey Torbet led Colorado College with 17 points, while Underbrink added 12.

Centenary returns to action Friday night, when it travels to conference-leading Trinity. Tip-off in San Antonio is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
