Ladies Fall to #15 Trinity, 78-66

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Ladies had a three-point lead early, but the Tigers built a double-digit advantage in the first quarter and never looked back as Centenary (3-13, 1-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell on the road to #23 Trinity (12-2, 5-0 SCAC) 78-66 Friday night, January 19.

Trinity scored the first four points of the game, but a 7-0 run gave Centenary the early lead. A layup by junior Jasmine Morris put the Ladies on the scoreboard, while a three by senior Samantha Lyons after a Trinity miscue gave the Maroon and White the lead. A jumper by sophomore Deunya Small gave put Centenary up 7-4 with 6:44 left in the first quarter.

Lyons made 6-for-8 from the field in the game, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and made all three free throws to score a season high 18 points. Morris added 11, while junior Savanah Doty scored 10. Freshman Kayla King grabbed 12 boards and added seven points.

After Centenary fell behind 77-54 with 7:15 left in the contest, the Ladies held Trinity to just a free throw the rest of the way. Freshman Haylee Washington split from the line in consecutive trips and Small hit a jumper. Freshman Ethany Cosby made a jumper, but a split from the charity stripe for Trinity pushed the deficit to 18 with 1:02 left. Senior Jessica Bruti and Cosby both made a pair from the line, and a Small layup proved to be the final margin.

The 66 points by the Ladies are the second-most scored against Trinity this season and the most in SCAC play.

The Tigers used a 21-3 advantage on fastbreak points and 27-14 edge in points off turnovers in the win.

Holding a slim 15-14 lead in the first, Trinity scored 17 unanswered in a two-minute span to push the advantage to double-digits for good. Julia Ackerman hit a three, followed by a Micah Weaver layup off a steal. Ackerman followed with a fastbreak three, and two free throws by Emily Daniel pushed the home team's advantage to 11. Ackerman added the layup, Daniel hit a jumper, and Ackerman capped the run with a three-point play.

Abby Holland led Trinity with 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting, while Ackerman came off the bench for 17.

Centenary returns to action Saturday night at Schreiner. Tip in Kerrville is set for 6 p.m.
