Columbus, Miss. – The Centenary women's soccer team returns to action for the first time in just over two weeks on Monday as the Ladies face the Mississippi University for Women Owls in a non-conference match set for 1 p.m. at Spring Mart Field inside the Columbus Soccer Complex.
The match between the Ladies (2-0) and Owls (0-4) will finally happen after being postponed twice. The teams were originally scheduled to meet on Wednesday then the match was moved to Sunday but the recent effects related to this week's cold weather forced the postponements. Monday's meeting will be the first in history between the Ladies and Owls.
Live stats and live video will be available for Monday's match at the following link: https://owlsathletics.com/. The Owls lost to Delta State at home, 8-0, on Feb. 10 in their last action while the Ladies blanked the Piedmont College Lady Lions by a score of 3-0 on Feb. 7 on home in their most recent match.
The Ladies enter Monday's match having won 18 of their last 21 matches overall dating back to the beginning of last season and have won eight of their last 10 road matches. The shutout victory over Piedmont was Centenary's first at Mayo Field since a 1-0 victory in overtime over Johnson & Wales on Oct. 4, 2019. The Ladies are 10-1 in their last 11 home matches.
Sophomore forward Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas) scored five minutes into the match against Piedmont for an early 1-0 lead. Gilbert has scored a goal in each of the Ladies' matches this season and is the team leader with her two goals. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) played another outstanding game as she recorded her eighth-career shutout and had seven saves. Pitcher's 132 career saves are the third-most in program history in the division III era.
Sophomore forward Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) scored the Ladies' second goal against Piedmont off the assist from junior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas), finding the net for the first time this season and for the fourth in her young career. Freshman forward Daisy Acosta (Deer Park, Texas) put the exclamation point on the Ladies' dominating victory as she found the net in the 76th minute for her first-career goal. Fellow freshman Hannah Haworth (Shreveport) was credited with her first-career assist on the score.
The Ladies remain on the road this week as they open their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Friday, Feb. 26 at St. Thomas at a time to be determined. Centenary then plays its first five matches in the month of March at home, beginning with a non-conference match versus Belhaven University on March 2 at 5:30 p.m. before the Ladies play their first home conference match against Austin College on March 6 at 6 p.m.
