The Ladies (7-1, 3-1 SCAC) are second in the SCAC standings behind leader Trinity but the Ladies lead the conference in wins. Texas Lutheran (2-3-1, 2-1-1 SCAC) tied Austin College, 1-1, in double overtime last Friday at home.
Centenary blanked Schreiner by a score of 2-0 at Mayo Field last Saturday as the Ladies recorded their sixth shutout of the season and rebounded from a disappointing 1-0 home loss the week prior at home to Dallas. The Ladies stymied Schreiner all day to improve to 23-4 in their last 27 matches overall dating back to the beginning of last season and the Maroon and White improved to a stellar 13-2 in their last 15 home matches.
The Ladies have posted shutouts over six of their eight opponents this season and have outscored the opposition 18-2. The Maroon and White are now only one shutout away from the division III era (2011-present) single season record of seven set in 2011.
Centenary leads the league in goals (18) and points (21) and has allowed the fewest goals (2) in the league. The Ladies also lead in assists (8), shots (44), and shutouts (6). The Ladies currently are tied for 12th in the country in division III in goals and tied for 18th in points.
Sophomore forward Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) got the Ladies on the board as she scored in the 35th minute of an assist from fellow sophomore Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas). The goal was Bascomb's second of the season. Centenary took that 1-0 lead into halftime after taking 13 shots in the half to just six for Schreiner.
The game remained 1-0 until late in the second half when junior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) scored an unassisted goal, her team-leading fourth of the season. McDonald took control of the ball just past midfield, wedged her way between two defenders then maintained control of the ball and rifled a beautiful shot into the back of the net past Schreiner goalie Audrey Rivera in the 74th minute for a 2-0 Centenary lead.
Ladies' senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) recorded another shutout, her sixth of the season and the 12th of her stellar career. She set a new division III era program record for shutouts in a career earlier this season. She made three saves on Saturday as Schreiner barely threatened the goal at all.
Centenary entered Saturday's action ranked first in the SCAC in shots, points, goals, and assists and the Maroon and White had allowed the fewest number of goals in the conference. The Ladies also led the way in shutouts and goals against average. Pitcher, the leader of the Ladies' stellar defense so far this season, is ranked third in the conference in saves (29), second in goals against average (0.25), and third in save percentage (.935) and first in shutouts. Pitcher was named SCAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this month. She is tied for third for most shutouts in the country in division III and is also 19th in GAA, 20th in save percentage, and tied for 38th in saves.
McDonald is having a sensational junior season as she is tied for the conference lead in goals (4), leads in points (10), leads in shots (27), and is tied for the lead in assists with two. She is also tied for third in game-winning goals and is the team leader in goals and points and tied for the lead in assists with her teammate Bascomb.
Gilbert is second on the team with three goals and has an assist for a total of seven points (second on the team). Bascomb has a pair of goals and a pair of assists for a total of six points to rank third on the Ladies in points and tied for second in goals and tied for the team lead in assists with McDonald. Senior Pam Fonseca (Houston, Texas) is tied for third on the team with two goals and ranks fourth in points with four. Gilbert is tied for third in the SCAC in goals while Bascomb and Fonseca are tied for sixth. Gilbert it also third in points and Bascomb and Fonseca are tied for fourth.
