Women's Soccer Blanks Texas Lutheran 2-0; Sets Single-Season Shutout Record

Seguin, Texas - The Centenary women's soccer team blanked the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Gustafson Field to set a division III era (2011-present) single-season record for shutouts in a season with its seventh in nine games this season.

The Ladies (8-1, 4-1 SCAC) are 24-4 in their last 28 matches overall dating back to the beginning of last season and have won 10 of their last 13 conference matches. Centenary has now posted shutouts over seven of its nine opponents this season and have outscored the opposition 20-2.

Centenary recorded its first win on the Bulldogs' home field since the 2012 season. Texas Lutheran fell to 2-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in SCAC play with the loss.

Centenary, which leads the SCAC in wins, entered Saturday's game tops in the conference in goals and points and had allowed the fewest goals in the league. The Ladies also entered leading in assists, shots, and shutouts and were tied for 12th in the country in division III in goals and tied for 18th in points.

Sophomore forward Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) gave the Ladies a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute after a scoreless first half with the assist from fellow sophomore Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas). The goal was Bascomb's third of the season as she scored for the second game in a row after doing so last Saturday at home versus Schreiner interestingly with an assist from Gilbert. Sophomore MF Celeste Muniz (Denton, Texas) added a late goal to make it 2-0 in the 80th minute, her second goal of the season and third of her career.

Ladies' senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) played another superb game, notching her seventh shutout of the season and 13th of her career. She played all 90 minutes and made five saves. Pitcher, the leader of the Ladies' stellar defense so far this season, entered Saturday's play ranked third in the conference in saves, second in goals against average, and third in save percentage, and first in shutouts. Pitcher, named SCAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this month, also entered the game tied for third for most shutouts in the country in division III and was also 19th in GAA, 20th in save percentage, and tied for 38th in saves.

Texas Lutheran used two goalies, as Abigial walker started and played 10:36 and was replaced by teammate Elana Rivera who played the final 79:24 and allowed both goals. Centenary took only three total shots in the game but made the most of them as the Maroon and White scored on two of them. The Ladies did not take a shot the entire first half to eight for the Bulldogs and TLU wound up with a decisive 18-3 advantage in shots for the match but could not find the net.

The Ladies remain on the road next weekend as they face Southwestern in Georgetown, Texas on Saturday, April 3 in a match set for 1 p.m. Centenary then closes the regular season at home versus Trinity on Senior Day at 3 p.m. at Mayo Field.
