The Ladies (6-1, 2-1 SCAC) lost for the first time this season last Saturday to Dallas at home, 1-0, and had their six-game winning streak snapped. Centenary lost for just the second time in its last 14 home matches and suffered just the fourth loss in 16 matches dating back to the beginning of last season. The Mountaineers enter Saturday's action at 0-3 on the season as they have been shutout in all three matches this season.
Dallas became just the second team all season to score on the Ladies as Centenary had pitched shutouts against five of its previous six opponents entering Saturday's play. The Ladies defeated LeTourneau, 2-1, on Jan. 30 and then blanked their next five opponents. Centenary has still outscored the opposition 16-2 this season and the Maroon and White are only two shutouts away from the division III era (2011-present) single season record of seven.
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders' Maddie Rodriguez sent a shot past Ladies' senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) for a 1-0 lead with the assist going to Courtney Bokanyi just three minutes into the second half. Centenary did not have many good scoring chances in the game, nor did Dallas, but the Crusaders made the most of their chance early in the second half.
Centenary enters Saturday's action ranked first in the SCAC in shots, points, goals, and assists and the Maroon and White have allowed the fewest number of goals in the conference. The Ladies also lead the way in shutouts and goals against average. Pitcher, the leader of the Ladies' stellar defense so far this season, ranks second in the conference in saves (26), goals against average (0.28), and third in save percentage (.929). Pitcher was named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on March 1 and has been superb all season in goal.
The Ladies are dominating the individual offensive statistical categories so far this season as junior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas), senior Pamela Fonseca (Houston, Texas), sophomore forward Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas), and sophomore forward Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) have all had excellent seasons to this point.
McDonald, Bascomb, Gilbert, and Fonseca currently rank first through fourth in the league in shots, and all four rank in the top five in points. McDonald and Gilbert are tied for first in the conference on goals (three) while Fonseca is fifth. McDonald and Bascomb are tied for first in the league in assists with two each.
