Ladies Faces TWU In Dual Meet On Sunday Night

Denton, Texas - The Centenary gymnastics team will face the host Texas Woman's University Pioneers in a dual meet on Sunday evening inside Kitty Magee Arena at 8 p.m.

The Ladies competed in a pair of meets last weekend, capped by a second-place finish last Sunday against Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a 188.225 score. Centenary, who finished third on Friday, March 8 with a score of 188.075 in a tri-meet against the host West Chester University Golden Rams and the William & Mary Tribe in West Chester, Pa., earned a season-high 47.625 on bars in Sunday's meet against Cornell.

Texas Woman's, a division II program, is a fellow member of the Midwest Independent Conference along with the Ladies. The Pioneers are currently ranked 52nd nationally in the latest Road to Nationals rankings while the Ladies are 80th. The Ladies and Pioneers are meeting for the second time this season after Centenary placed second to TWU in its home opener on Jan. 21 at the Gold Dome.

Senior Lacey Wedge (Belle Chasse, La.) and sophomore Sophie Schmitz (Trophy Club, Texas) highlighted the Ladies' performances last weekend as they claimed two of the weekly Midwest Independent Conference awards as Wedge was named the MIC Gymnast of the Week and Schmitz was tabbed as recipient of the Coaches' Choice Award.

Wedge earned the honor for the first time in her career and is the first Centenary gymnast to win it this season. Wedge highlighted the Ladies' performance last Friday in their tri-meet against West Chester and William & Mary as she won on floor with a new career-high 9.85 and finished second on vault with a career-high tying 9.725. She continued her impressive senior season after earning a 9.80 on floor in the Ladies' final home meet of the season on Feb. 26 against Bridgeport, which at the time was a new career high in her final appearance in the Gold Dome. Her career high on floor coming into the season was a 9.575 and she has now scored a 9.60 or higher six times this season and 9.70 or higher four times. She previously scored a 9.725 on vault last month in a tri-meet against Air Force and UC-Davis. Her win on Friday is the first of her career.

Schmitz recorded a new season and career-high 9.775 on bars to finish second and finished second in the All-Around with a new season and career-best 37.925 on Sunday against Cornell. Schmitz also tied for seventh place on vault with a 9.55.

Schmitz, who competed in the AA for the first time in her career on Friday against West Chester and William & Mary, also earned a season and career-high 9.55 on floor to finish eighth. On Friday, Schmitz finished second in the All-Around with a 37.675 as she competed in the AA for the first time in her career. She tied for sixth place on vault with a new career-best 9.65. She finished 10th on bars with a 9.625 and 14th on floor with a 9.525 in her debut in the event.

Freshman Olivia Williams (Cape Coral, Fla.) was the Ladies' top finisher on floor with a 9.65 on Sunday, her second-best score of the season in the event, to place seventh. Senior Isabel Plaza (San Antonio, Texas) led the way for Centenary on vault as she scored a season and career-high tying 9.575 to finish sixth. Sophomore Amy Foret (Bedford, Texas) tied Schmitz for seventh place on vault with a 9.55 and Foret also finished seventh on beam (9.525).

Senior Roxanne Myers (Prairieville, La.) was the top finisher for the Ladies on bars with a new career-high 9.575 to place sixth and Rylie Molina (Moss Bluff, La.) led the way on beam as she tied for third place with a 9.75. Freshman Brooke Murdock (Garland, Texas) finished sixth on beam (9.575) and senior Kendall Huff (Riviera, Texas) finished 10th on vault with a 9.475.

Sophomore Claire Flores (Oklahoma City, Okla.) finished ninth on bars with a 9.50, and ninth on floor with a season-high tying 9.50 and junior Emma Lavelle (Mandeville, La.) placed 10thon bars with a 9.40.
