Gents Fall To Cornell In Home Opener On Saturday, 12-8

Shreveport – The Centenary lacrosse team fell 12-8 to the Cornell College Rams on Saturday in a non-conference contest at Mayo Field.

The Gents (0-2) were playing their home opener after a season-opening loss at Hendrix on Wednesday. The Rams improved to 1-0. Centenary led 3-1 after the first quarter but Cornell responded with a 4-1 edge in the second period to take a 5-4 halftime lead. The Rams then outscored the Gents 7-4 after the half to secure the win.

Centenary finished with a 36-35 edge in shots, Cornell had 43 ground balls to the Gents' 38, and of the 23 face offs, Cornell finished with a slight (12-11) advantage. The Rams turned the ball over 23 times and the Gents 19 while the visitors were whistled for 10 penalties and the Gents seven.

Senior John Mark Waniewski (Bossier City, La.) led the Gents with five goals as he finished just two goals shy of his single-game career high of seven and recorded his fifth multi-goal performance in the last two seasons. He found the net five times in the 11 shots he took.

Sophomore A G'Colby Spivey (Dallas, Texas) added a pair of goals and senior A/MF Mark Temple (Houston, Texas) scored one. Freshman A Liam Johns (Shreveport, La.) tallied three assists, sophomore A Braxton Parchman (Shreveport, La.) had two, and freshman MF Dominic Ogier (St. Louis, Mo.) and Temple each had one. Spivey now has three goals on the season after scoring a pair in Gents' opener at Hendrix and Temple has two.

Kyle Jussila scored a game-high six goals to lead the Rams and all scorers, Luke Baldwin had three, Jack Barton scored a pair, and Warren Wilberg added one. Jussila also had three assists, Baldwin had two, and four Rams had one each.

Sophomore GK Alex Nicks-Davis (Nashville, Tenn.) started and played the first half and then sophomore GK Jason Turner (Bossier City, La.) came in for the second half. Cornell GK Thomas Cook went the distance and made 17 saves.Nicks-Davis made eight saves with two ground balls in his 30 minutes and Turner collected five saves.

Freshman MF Seven Davillier (Shreveport, La.) led the Gents in ground balls with six and junior M/A Kyle Comi (Allen, Texas) and junior D Matthew Lulich (New Orleans, La.) each had five ground balls.

Senior D Chris Dant (Bossier City, La.), freshman FO Chris Masterson (Zachary, La.), and  junior LSM Jackson Ossman (Shreveport, La.) each had four GB's. and Ogier had three. Dant had a team-leading three caused turnovers.

Centenary returns to action at Huntingdon College on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
