Busy Weekend Sees Centenary Soccer Play Home Openers of 2017; Volleyball Travels to Mississippi

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Centenary Gents and Ladies soccer teams both begin a home stand the next two weekends, while volleyball plays in the Belhaven Classic September 8-9 against Mississippi University for Women (twice), Belhaven, and Rust.

The Maroon and White host Austin College for their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener Friday night, September 8, with the Ladies kicking off the pair of games at 5 p.m. The Gents close the weekend at Mayo Field Saturday night, September 9, when they host East Texas Baptist for a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m.

Ladies Soccer

The Ladies soccer team (0-2) looks for their first win of the season when it hosts Austin College (1-1). Centenary is 2-9 against Austin College all-time, but won both meetings in the 2016 season.

Early in her collegiate career, freshman goalie Maggie Pitcher ranks second in the conference with 12 saves.

The Ladies have won their last two home openers.

Gents Soccer

The Gents soccer team (0-1-1) looks for its first victory of the season when they host Austin College (2-1) for an SCAC showdown Friday night with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Centenary is 9-7-1 with the 'Roos, including a split last season.

The Maroon and White conclude the weekend with a non-conference game against local rival East Texas Baptist on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Gents are 3-1 against the Tigers, including a 2-1 win in Shreveport to kick off the 2015 season.

Senior Kaleb Behm leads the conference in saves (18) and sits fifth in save percentage (.857).

The Gents have been victorious in every home opener with head coach Kyle Symczak has been on the sidelines (2014 and 2015 as a graduate assistant, 2016 as head coach).

Volleyball

Centenary (2-3) looks to rebound from a tough five-set loss at East Texas Baptist when it plays four matches in the Belhaven Classic this Friday and Saturday, September 8-9. The Ladies take on Mississippi University for Women Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a match with the host Blazers at 7 p.m.

The Maroon and White takes on Rust on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., finishing the weekend with a match against Mississippi University for Women at 3 p.m.

This will be the first ever meeting MUW and Centenary, while the Ladies are 7-0 against Rust, sweeping the two matches with the Bearcats last season. Centenary lost both matches against the Blazers and are 1-9 all-time against them.

In the early going, senior Desiree Frey and junior Hailey Lawson rank among the top in the SCAC in terms of hitting. Frey leads the conference in overall kills (64) and third in kills per set (3.37), while Lawson ranks third in overall kills (52) and sixth in kills per set (3.06).

After this weekend, Ladies and Gents soccer finish their minor home stand next weekend Texas Lutheran and Southwestern. Volleyball plays its home opener Wednesday, September 13, when it takes on Louisiana College for the first time ever at 7 p.m.
