Gents and Southwestern Soccer Battle to 2-2 Draw

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Gents were able to score first in each half, but Southwestern answered with the equalizer both times as Centenary (0-4-2, 0-2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) and Southwestern (3-2-2, 1-0-2) tied at two goals each Sunday afternoon, September 17.

Centenary lit up the scoreboard in the 15th minute when sophomore Gabe Rodriguez's corner deflected off classmate Nic Douthit to the far post. Sophomore Scott Halper directed the ball to the center of the net for his first goal of the season and the third of his collegiate career.

After Southwestern tied the game seven minutes later to send the match to halftime tied at one, junior Chase Clark netted his second goal of the season to put the Gents ahead. In the 62nd minute, the Maroon and White were awarded a free kick near the end line on the right side. Rodriguez sent a kick along the ground straight through, and Clark found the back of the net to put Centenary up 2-1.

Both teams failed to score in the extra period and both recorded their second tie of the season. Southwestern outshot Centenary 28-20 for the game - including 11-9 in shots on goal.

Southwestern's Jake Swonke, who tallied a game high seven shots (four on target), scored both of the equalizers on a pass from Kip Karschnik.

Senior Kaleb Behm grabbed nine saves in goal for the Gents, while Ryan Benner added seven stops for the Pirates.

Centenary returns to action Friday, September 22, with an afternoon game at Dallas. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
