Gents Soccer Drops Road Contest to Schreiner in Overtime, 4-3

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Gents scored the first two goals of the first half and led 3-2 with less than a minute left in regulation, but a late Mountaineer goal and a penalty kick in overtime proved to be the difference as Centenary (2-13-2, 1-11-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Schreiner (4-11-2, 2-9-2 SCAC) 4-3 Sunday afternoon, October 22.

Junior Nick Hammond opened the scoring in the 16th minute off a pass from freshman Gin Pau to score his third goal of the season - briefly tying him with sophomore Scott Halper for the team lead. Four minutes later, freshman Greg Petreas put Centenary up 2-0, scoring off a pass from sophomore Nic Douthit.

Schreiner scored four minutes later and early in the second half to tie the game for the first time. However, Halper scored unassisted in the 64th minute to put Centenary up 3-2.

The Gents held the lead for the next 26 minutes, but a free kick off a foul with a minute remaining led to an Antonio Cortes shot saved by Gents senior goalie Kaleb Behm. However, Daniel Banda cleaned up the rebound to send the game to an extra period.

In the 99th minute, Schreiner was awarded a free kick and Gregg Guiterrez made the attempt for the Mountaineers to give the home team the golden goal.

Behm finished the game with four saves on eight shots faced, while his counterpart between the pipes - Schreiner's Brandon Anselmi - stopped five shots on three shots faced.

While Centenary was outshot 20-10, both teams managed eight shots on goal.

Centenary returns to action for its final home game of the season Tuesday, October 24, against Hendrix. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
