Men's Soccer Opens SCAC Play With 2-1 Win Over Johnson And Wales

Shreveport - The Centenary men's soccer team edged the Johnson and Wales Wildcats, 2-1, in a thrilling match on Friday night at Mayo Field in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Gents (5-2, 1-0 SCAC) received a pair of goals from sophomore Wil Escobar (Cypress, Texas) to claim the victory. Escobar tied the match in the 60th minute off the assist from freshman Jaden Harmon (Houston, Texas), and then gave the Maroon and White the lead and eventual win with a goal in the 81st minute off an assist from junior teammate Greg Petreas (Denton, Texas). 

Centenary goalkeeper Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played a superb game and recorded seven saves. J&W keeper Erick Torres was solid on Friday as well and made 11 saves. The Wildcats fell to 1-8-1, 0-1 SCAC) with the loss. The two teams split the season series after the Wildcats defeated the Gents, 3-1, in comeback fashion back on Sept. 15 in Colorado. 

The Gents held a 22-16 advantage in total shots and took seven corner kicks to the three taken by the Wildcats. Centenary has now won four straight matches and is 5-0 at home. The Gents face Colorado College on Sunday at noon at home to wrap up a five-game homestand.#CTheOpportunity #GoCentenary.
