Softball Splits DH Versus Southwestern On Final Day Of Regular Season

Shreveport– The Centenary softball team split a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with the Southwestern University Pirates on the final day of the regular season as the Ladies celebrated Senior Day at the Centenary Softball Complex.

The Ladies (17-22, 12-9 SCAC) took game one 7-0 and fell 3-0 in game two but won the series following an 11-0 run-rule shutout win in five innings on Friday night over the Pirates (20-20, 13-8 SCAC). Centenary tied the division III era (2012-present) single-season record for conference wins by virtue of its game one win on Sunday.

Centenary has earned the No. 4 seed in next weekend's SCAC Championship in San Antonio, Texas and will face No. 5 seed Trinity (13-26, 10-10 SCAC) at 11 a.m. on Friday in the first game of the weekend.

Game one recap: Centenary 7 Southwestern 0

The game was scoreless until the Ladies put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth. They added one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cruise to their second-straight shutout win following an 11-0 victory in the series opener on Friday.

Centenary finished with 10 hits, three of which were extra-base hits. The Ladies did not commit an error, only struck out three times, and left four on base. Southwestern had seven hits, left 10 on, struck out five times, and made one error. The Pirates walked three times while the Ladies did not draw a walk.

Freshman C Jaeden Thrasher (Forney, Texas) got the Ladies on the board in the bottom of the fourth as she belted a one-out three-run homer to make it 3-0. Senior CF Mallory Stout (Trinity, Texas) followed with a single up the middle and junior 1B Isabelle Dominguez (Newark, Calif.) doubled to score Stout and make it 4-0.

Hailey Arrington (6-7) started and took the loss as she allowed four runs, all earned, and five hits in her 3.1 innings of work with no walks and two strikeouts. She faced 16 batters and threw 35 pitches (28 strikes) and wad chased from the game after Dominguez's double. Mattigan Aga was the Pirates' second pitcher of the game and went an inning, allowing one earned run and two hits with no walks and a strikeout. Ryen Browning went the final 1.2 innings and allowed two earned runs and three hits with no BB and no K.

Freshman P Alexis Roach (Pineville, La.) started in the circle for the Ladies and tossed her first-career complete game shutout. Roach improved to 5-4 on the season as she threw a season-high 136 pitches (82 strikes) in her 14th appearance and 13th start, to record her fifth complete game of the season. She allowed seven hits and walked three with five K's in her seven innings of work.

Freshman 2B Catherine Stokes (Natchitoches, La.) had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to extend the Centenary lead to 5-0 and the Ladies scored two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore DP Alyssa Akers (Maurice, La.) and an RBI single by junior RF Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.).

Cox, Stout, and senior LF Kaylea Patridge (Las Vegas, Nev.) each finished with two hits and Thrasher led the way in RBI with three thanks to her third blast of the season. Cox was 2-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored, Patridge went 2-3 with a run and a stolen base, and Stokes was 0-3 with a sac fly.

Stout was 2-3 with two runs scored, Akers was 1-3 with an RBI, and Dominguez was 1-2 with an RBI. Sophomore 3B Viviana Rivero (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was 1-3 with a run scored.

Southwestern was led on offense by 2B Calle Collier, CF Erica Otto, and C Tauryn Alexander, who each finished with two hits. 1B Megan McCarthy went 1-3 with a walk. Alexander had a walk and Collier stole a base.

The Pirates salvaged the final game of the series as they scored all three runs over the final two innings following five scoreless frames. Southwestern finished with five hits, one error, drew one walk, struck out twice, and left three on base. The Ladies also had five hits, did not commit an error, drew three walks, struck out five times, and left seven on base.

Freshman Abigail Hodgson (Georgetown, Texas) started for the Ladies in the circle and took the loss as she allowed three runs, all earned, and five hits in her six innings of work. Hodgson (1-6) walked one, struck out one, hit one batter, and faced 24 as she threw 83 pitches (55 strikes). Freshman Emma Crow (Krotz Springs, La.) pitched the final inning and struck out one of the three batters she faced.

Madison Vela (10-10) started and got the win for the Pirates as she went the distance. She gave up five hits and walked three with five K's. She faced 28 batters and threw 114 pitches (68 strikes). Vela allowed singles to Stout, Stokes, and Thrasher and a double to sophomore DP/1B Kaitlyn Dickey (Church Point, La.). Dickey also drew a pair of walks and Dominguez walked once.

Collier drove in a run with an RBI single in the sixth and McCarthy drove her home with an RBI single of her own. LF Sam Martinez had an RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring. Collier was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Otto was 1-3 with a run and a stolen base.
