Ladies Fall in Final Regular Season Game At Schreiner On Sunday

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary softball team dropped a 4-0 decision in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play to the Schreiner Mountaineers on Sunday in the regular-season finale for both teams at Mountaineer Softball Field.

The Ladies (15-19, 8-11 SCAC) suffered a series sweep after falling in a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 11-3 in five innings and 9-8 in eight innings. Schreiner improved to an even 20-20 overall and 14-7 in the SCAC. Both teams have secured spots in the 2021 SCAC Championship which will be played in Kerrville April 30-May 2 with Schreiner serving as the host.

It was a frustrating day for the Ladies as they led 3-0 entering the fifth inning in game one but Schreiner exploded for 11 runs to take the win. In game two, The Ladies and Mountaineers were tied at 3-3 heading to the seventh inning and then Centenary scored five runs to take an 8-3 lead and just needed three outs to win but allowed Schreiner to score five of its own and tie the game and then the Mountaineers scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off win.

Centenary freshman pitcher Hailee Leger (Belle Chasse, La.) started and was charged with the loss to fall to 7-10 this season. She went the distance and allowed four runs, but just three earned, and seven hits in six innings of work. She walked one and struck out five. Schreiner starter Bri Wodtke (9-7) tossed a complete game and allowed just three hits with a walk and eight K's.

Schreiner jumped out to a 3-0 lead after its first at-bat and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to cruise to the win. The Mountaineers had seven hits in the game and one extra-base hit. Ladies' freshman right fielder Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.), fellow freshman Cambry Bates (Readhimer, La.), and sophomore CF Mallory Stout (Trinity, Texas) each had a hit, with Bates having the only extra-base hit for the Ladies, a double. Cox also stole a base, her team-leading 21st of the season.

The bracket for the 2021 SCAC Championship will be announced Monday.
