Ladies Fall At Home To Belhaven On Saturday, 62-51

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team dropped a 62-51 decision to the Belhaven University Blazers on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies fell to 1-4 on the season while the Blazers improved to 4-1. Centenary, which opened its season with a 69-64 comeback win over LeTourneau at home on Nov. 5, has lost four games in a row.

Sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) scored a new career-high 24 points for the Ladies, which was also a game-high for the sensational second-year player. She made 11 of 22 shots overall in 39 minutes and made a pair of three-point baskets. She also grabbed seven rebounds, most on the team, and added an assist and a steal. Tremie has now scored in double figures three times this season and in the Ladies' exhibition loss at Northwestern State on Nov. 9.

Junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) joined Tremie in double figures as she scored 11 on 4-6 shooting in 28 minutes. She grabbed four rebounds and had two steals, an assist, and a block and made 3-5 free throw attempts. Fellow junior Destini Powell (Minden, La.) added six points in her 30 minutes of action as she shot 2-7 from the floor and had six rebounds with an assist.

Freshman G Mary Leday (Opelousas, La.) and junior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) each scored three points and a pair of freshmen guards, Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) and Alana Jones (Shreveport) scored two points apiece. Leday was active on both ends of the court all day long as she added five assists, five steals, and five rebounds in 33 minutes.

Drumgo grabbed a season-best six rebounds and picked up one assist, one steal, and a block. Jones had three boards, two assists, two steals, and a block and made both of her free throw attempts.

The Ladies shot 35.7 % (20-56) overall for the game and nearly won the rebounding battle, picking up 41 to the Blazers' 43. Centenary struggled from beyond the arc, making just 3 of 15 attempts with Tremie making two and Powell hitting the other. The Ladies made of 13 free throws and recorded 12 steals, 11 assists, and five blocks.

Belhaven shot 34.3 % overall and 30 % (6-20) from three-point range. The Blazers were 10-18 from the free throw line and tallied 15 assists, 14 steals, and five blocks. Belhaven turned the ball over 20 times while Centenary gave it away 23 times. Three Belhaven players scored in double figures led by 13 from Nyah Davis. Shomaria Overton scored 11 and grabbed seven rebounds, and Xhiir Burgess added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Belhaven led 16-10 after a quarter by the second period belonged to the Ladies as they outscored the visitors 19-10 to take a 29-26 into the locker room at halftime. The Blazers however returned the favor in the third quarter and outscored the Maroon and White, 22-14 to take a five-point lead (48-43) into the final quarter. Belhaven then held the edge in a low-scoring final period, 14-8, to close out the double-digit win.

The Blazers were up 23-13 at the 7:10 mark of the second quarter but then the Ladies went on an impressive run over the next seven minutes and a Jones layup tied the score at 26-26 with just 52 second remaining before the half to cap a 13-3 run. A free throw by jones and basket by Leday then gave the Ladies their three-point halftime lead.

The teams traded baskets for the majority of the third quarter but then Belhaven's defense tightened and held the Ladies to just four points over the final two minutes of the quarter and went up seven points with just under a minute remaining. A basket by Tremie with 13 seconds left cut the Belhaven to five. The Ladies were held scoreless for the first four minutes of the final period until Tremie connected from deep to make it a 53-46 game with 6:18 remaining. Belhaven then outscored Centenary 9-5 to seal the win.

The Ladies are now on the road for a pair of exhibition games next week, on Monday at ULM in Monroe at 6:30 p.m. and at McNeese on Wednesday in Lake Charles at 5 p.m.
