Ladies Fall At Home To Southwestern On Wednesday, 76-63

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 76-63 to the Southwestern University Pirates in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies (3-11, 1-5 SCAC) have lost five games in a row as they returned to the court for the first time since Dec. 19. Southwestern improved to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in SCAC play.

Three Centenary players reached double figures, led by 14 from Junior G Destini Powell (Minden, La.). Powell has reached double figures eight times this season and has done so in seven of the last nine games. She was 5-12 from the floor in 32 minutes of action and 4-8 from beyond the arc with seven rebounds and a season-high seven assists. Her four treys are also a season-best and she has made three or more in a game three times this season.

Junior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored a career-high 13 points in 24 minutes on 6-9 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. Bagwell's previous high in points was 10 earlier this season against Louisiana Christian University. She added a steal and was 1-2 at the free throw line. freshman G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) scored a season-high 11 points off the bench in 18 minutes. She made 4-9 shots overall and grabbed two rebounds with a steal. She was 3-4 at the free throw line. Her previous high in points was 10 on Nov. 16 at Millsaps.

Sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and had four assists, a blocked shot, and a steal as she played all 40 minutes. Tremie shot 4-14 overall, made one trey, and played 40 minutes for the sixth time this season. Junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) added six points and two rebound with a blocked shot in 13 minutes off the bench. She was 2-5 overall and 2-4 from the free throw line.

Freshman G Alana Jones (Shreveport) played 26 minutes and scored four points with four rebounds. She had a balanced and impressive overall stat line with three assists, three steals, and a blocked shot. Senior G Jennae Mayberry (Clovis, Calif.) scored three points and grabbed four boards in 23 minutes. Freshman G Mary Leday (Opelousas, La.) played 19 minutes and scored three points and added three rebounds.

Centenary shot 41 % (25-61) for the game overall, 7-20 (35 %) from beyond the arc, and 6-10 at the free throw line. The Pirates shot 41.3 % (26-63) but struggled from the free throw line, going just 12-23 (52.2 %). Southwestern however made up for the misses at the line by making 12 three-point baskets, many in key situations, and were led by a single-game conference record 10 treys by Lauren Fulenwider. The senior guard was 10-19 from beyond the arc and scored a game-high 32 points in 28 minutes.

Southwestern sophomore F/C Princess Roberts entered the game as the SCAC's leading rebounder at 11.0 per game and hit her average as she grabbed 11 on Wednesday with 12 points in 26 minutes. Ellie Ward scored 10 in 30 minutes to join Fulenwider and Roberts in double figures. Ward added seven assists and six rebounds.

Southwestern led 15-5 after the first quarter but the Ladies found their footing in the second period, outscoring the Pirates 17-16 to make the halftime score a manageable 31-22. The Pirates finished with a slight (23-21) edge in the third quarter and then did the same in the final period, outscoring Centenary 22-20.

The Pirates started off hot, holding a 10-0 lead five minutes into the game after a layup by Taylor Carney. Powell finally got the Ladies on the board with a three pointer at the 4:6 mark. Southwestern built its lead to a commanding 23-8 four minutes into the second period but a pair of three-point baskets by Tremie and Leday and a tip-in by Jones with :20 seconds left before halftime allowed the Ladies to cut into the lead and their stingy defense held the Pirates to just eight points over the final six minutes of the half.

A three by Fulenwider at the 6:39 mark of the fourth quarter widened Southwestern's lead to 66-43 and despite the Ladies finishing the game on a 20-10 run, the earlier deficit was too much to overcome. The Pirates finished the game with a 44-36 edge in rebounding while Centenary turned the ball over 18 times compared to 14 for the Pirates.

Centenary is back in action next Saturday, Jan. 22 at Austin College for another conference contest. The game is set for 4 p.m. in Sherman, Texas.
