Ladies Hang Tough With Texas Lutheran But Fall 63-49 On Monday

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 63-49 to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Monday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies (3-13, 1-7 SCAC) battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit to draw within four points late in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs (9-5, 6-0 SCAC) were able to withstand Centenary's late rally and secure the win to remain undefeated in conference play. The Ladies have now lost seven in a row but held an opponent to 65 points or less for the ninth time this season. 

Centenary was led in scoring on Monday by junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) with 13 points. She made 5-8 shots overall in 30 minutes and was 3-4 at the free throw line. Jones added four rebounds and an assist as she scored in double figures for the 10th time this season. Junior G Destini Powell (Minden, La.) scored 11 and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action. She had an assist and a steal, shot 4-15 from the floor and made three treys. Powell, like Jones, has also reached double figures 10 times this season and has done so in nine of the last 11 games.

Sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) scored 10 points in 32 minutes and has eight double-digit scoring efforts this season. She was 4-12 shooting and nailed a pair of three pointers with two rebounds. She added a pair of assists and a steal.

The Ladies shot 35.3 % (18-51) for the game overall and 26.1 % (6-23) from beyond the arc. Texas Lutheran was 27-65 (41.5 %) overall but just 4-13 (30.8 %) from three-point range. Centenary was solid at the free throw line, as the Ladies made 7-10 while the Bulldogs struggled, missing nine of 14 for 35.7 %. Texas Lutheran was strong on the glass, outrebound the Maroon and White, 45-30.

The Ladies turned the ball over 16 times and the Bulldogs gave it away 12 times. TLU recorded 15 assists, nine steals, and one blocked shot while Centenary finished with 13 assists, seven steals, and blocked a pair of shots. Ashley Reyes led for Bulldogs in double figures with 14 points in just 20 minutes of action. She was 7-10 shooting overall and grabbed five rebounds.

The teams were even (15-15) after one quarter and then the Bulldogs finished with a 17-7 advantage in the second period to take a 32-22 lead at halftime. The Ladies outscored the Bulldogs 19-13 in the third quarter to make it a 45-41 game entering the fourth quarter.

Texas Lutheran scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter and held the Ladies scoreless for the first five and a half minutes until a layup by Tremie at the 4:26 gave Centenary its first points of the quarter to make it 55-43. The Bulldogs maintained a double-digit the remainder of the period and finished with an 18-8 advantage to secure the win.

TLU finished with a 34-12 edge in points in the paint and scored 19 second-chance points to the Ladies' six. The Bulldogs scored 14 points off turnovers while the Ladies finished with 11. TLU scored 31 bench points and Centenary had 17.

Centenary remains at home for a quick turnaround as the Ladies face the Austin College 'Roos on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game is a rematch of last Saturday when the 'Roos defeated the Ladies 75-39 in Sherman, Texas.
