The Ladies (0-6-1) are eager to get back on the field after they suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 loss to the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Sunday evening in a non-conference contest at home. Alcorn State (1-4-1) lost 3-2 at Nicholls on Sept. 13 in its most recent action.
The two teams are meeting for the first time since Sept. 8 of last season as the Ladies made history with a 2-1 win over the Braves in Lorman, Miss. History was made that night as the Ladies defeated a Division I opponent for the first time in the current division III era (2011-present). Centenary is 3-0 all-time versus Alcorn State.
Centenary led 1-0 with just under seven minutes remaining in Sunday's match against LeTourneau but the visitors stunned the Maroon and White with a pair of goals, including the game-winning score with just 12 seconds remaining to record the improbable victory.
Centenary took a 1-0 lead when junior D Alexa Hinojosa (Pasadena, Texas) was fouled inside the box and earned a penalty kick. She rifled the ball into the net past LeTourneau goalkeeper Kiersten Reeser, her second goal this season and fourth of her career. That one-goal lead appeared as if it would be enough to give the Ladies their first win of the season, but Terra Tucker's goal in the 84th minute tied the match and six minutes later with the final seconds of the clock ticking in regulation, Heather Fellows scored to give the YellowJackets the win. Sophomore GK Madison Ersoff (Shreveport, La.) played all 90 minutes against LeTourneau and recorded five saves.
The Ladies, despite still being winless this season, have been very close to breaking through recently. The Maroon and White fell 2-1 last Friday at St. Thomas Celts in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest in Houston and earned a hard-fought 0-0 tie with the Belhaven University Blazers earlier that week in Jackson, Miss.
Hinojosa is the team leader in both goals (2) and points (4) this season while senior MF/D Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) is the leader in assists with two. senior F Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) needs just one more assist to become the all-time leader in the division III era (2011-present) in the category.
