Ladies Make History In 5-1 Victory Over Austin College Friday

Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team recorded its first win of the season on Friday evening, with a dominant and historic 5-1 victory over the Austin College 'Roos in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (1-11-1, 1-6 SCAC) snapped a seven-game losing streak since earning a 0-0 tie at Belhaven on Sept. 13 and won for the first time since beating Auston College 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 29 of last season in Sherman, Texas. The 'Roos remain winless on the season at 0-9-1 and 0-7 in league play.

Centenary also set multiple single-match division III era (2011-present) records on Friday:

Shots: 35 (Previous record: 34 vs. Austin College, 3/6/21)

Shots on Goal: 23 (Previous record: 27 vs. Austin College, 10/27/19)

The Ladies' five goals are also the most they have scored in a match since recording a 6-1 win over Louisiana College on Oct. 21, 2019. The five goals is also tied for second-most in a single match in the D3 era, accomplished three times previously and most recently on Sept. 3, 2016 against Louisiana College. Centenary's 13 points on Friday is also tied for fifth-most in a single match in the D3 era.

Senior MF/D Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) scored the first goal of the match as she found the net in the 36th minute off an assist from sophomore F/MF Mackenzie Williams (Stonewall, La.) for a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later senior D Haleigh Gangloff (Pearland, Texas) scored an unassisted goal and the Ladies took their 2-0 lead into halftime.

Senior F Daisy Acosta (Deer Park, Texas) scored in the 53rd minute, assisted by senior F Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas). Two minutes later, the 'Roos got on the board as Emeri Watson scored with the assist from Shelby Smith. Junior MF Cynthia Williams (Bossier City, La.) scored in the 63rd minute, assisted by Acosta, for a 4-1 lead, and senior MF Celeste Muniz (Denton, Texas) added the fifth and final goal - an unassisted one, for the Ladies at the 63:37 mark.

McDonald scored her first goal of the season and 10th of her career. Acosta now has two goals and an assist this season and five goals and three assists in her career. Gilbert tallied her sixth-career assist, Williams scored her second-career goal, and Muniz now has five goals in her career. Sophomore GK Madison Ersoff (Shreveport, La.) went the distance for the Ladies and made four saves. She entered the night second in the SCAC with 44 saves. The 'Roos played a pair of goalies, as Kenedie Lane started and allowed three goals and made 10 saves. Heaven Barber relieved her and played the final 28:39 and allowed two goals while recording seven saves.

The Ladies finished with a 14-3 advantage in shots in the first half and then out-shot Austin College 21-5 after halftime for a decisive 35-8 final advantage. Each team took one corner kick, with the Ladies scoring off of one, and 14 fouls were called – nine for the Ladies and five on the 'Roos.

Centenary now leads the all-time series 10-8-1 and has won six in a row over the 'Roos dating back to the 2017 season.

The Ladies wrap up the weekend with another home match on Sunday versus the University of Dallas (4-5-2, 3-2-2- SCAC) at Noon. The Crusaders defeated St. Thomas, 1-0, in Houston on Friday night.
