Ladies Fall At Jarvis Christian In Season Opener

The Ladies allowed a season-low 54 points in Sunday's loss to Southwestern.

Hawkins, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 72-51 to the Jarvis Christian University Bulldogs in its season opener on Wednesday evening in a non-conference contest inside the E.W. Rand Center.

The Ladies (0-1) and Bulldogs (1-1) were tied 13-13 after the first quarter, but then Jarvis Christian outscored the Maroon and White 41-19 over the next 210 minutes to take control of the game. The Ladies edged the Bulldogs, 19-18 in the fourth quarter.

Centenary shot 26.0 % (13-50) for the game, 40 % (4-10) from 3-point range, and 21-33 at the free throw line (63.6 %). Jarvis Christian finished 25-63 for 39.7 % from the floor, 9-20 from beyond the arc for 45 % and 13-27 at the FT line for 48.1 %. The Ladies finished with 29 rebounds, six assists, four steals, four blocked shots, and 20 turnovers while the Bulldogs tallied 49 rebounds, 16 assists, 11 steals, two blocks, and also had 20 TO's.

Sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) and junior G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) each scored nine points to lead the Ladies and four players scored seven each - sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.), sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.), sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.), and senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.).

Jones grabbed a team-leading six rebounds with two assists and two steals in her 27 minutes off the bench as she scored all nine of her points at the FT line, finishing 9-10. Powell played 35 minutes and was 4-15 from the floor and 1-2 from beyond the arc with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Barrow played 21 minutes and was 2-5 from the floor, 1-2 from 3-point range, and 2-4 at the FT line with a rebound, an assist, and a steal.

Stokes was 3-7 from the floor and 1-3 at the FT line in her 15 minutes with for rebounds and a blocked shot. Plumber played 22 minutes of the bench and had two rebounds and was 4-6 from the FT line and Bagwell played 30 minutes and was 2-5 from the floor, 1-2 from 3-point range, and 2-2 at the FT line with for rebounds, three blocked shots, and a steal.

Faith Robinson led all scorers with 19 points and was one of three Bulldogs to reach double figures. She recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds and was 7-11 from the floor, 1-1 from beyond the arc, and 4-4 from the FT line in 26 minutes with an assist, a steal, and a blocked shot. Raniya White scored 15 points and also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds in her 26 minutes. She added seven assists and a steal and was 6-9 from the floor, 1-2 from beyond the arc, and 2-4 at the FT line. Jada Williams scored 10 in 26 minutes and had four boards, two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot and was 3-8 overall, 3-7 from 3-point range, and 1-4 at the FT line. Jacy Reese scored nine in 10 minutes as she went 3-6 from the floor, 2-4 from long range, and 1-4 from the FT line with three rebounds and two steals. Michah McCrea scored point points in 13 minutes with two boards, an assist, and a steal.

The Bulldogs finished with a 24-24 edge in points in the paint, and scored 14 second-chance points while the Ladies had 10. Jarvis Christian had 13 points off of turnovers with Centenary scoring 12, and the Bulldogs' bench outscored the Ladies, 23-17.

The Ladies (0-1) will face Wiley University (3-1) in their next game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Marshall, Texas. Centenary's home opener is next Wednesday, Nov. 15 against LeTourneau University set for 5:30 p.m. at the Gold Dome.
