Ladies Fall At Home to Trinity In Season Finale

Shreveport - The Centenary women's basketball team finished its season with an 80-47 loss to the Trinity University Tigers on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies finished their 2023-24 season with a 2-22 record and finished 1-15 in SCAC play. Trinity (20-5, 15-1 SCAC) will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's SCAC Championship held at the Gold Dome and hosted by Centenary.

Trinity led 18-9 after one quarter and ran away with the game in the second period, outscoring Centenary 26-4 to take a commanding 42-13 lead at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Ladies 22-14 in the third and then Centenary finished with a 20-14 advantage in the fourth quarter.

The Ladies shot just 25.4 % (16-63) from the floor while the Tigers finished 27-61 for 44.3 %. Centenary was 4-25 from beyond the arc for 16 % and 11-14 at the free throw line for 78.6 %. The Tigers made a living from deep as they connected on half (16-32) of their attempts for an impressive 50 % but finished just 10-23 from the FT line for 43.5 %. The Tigers finished with 22 assists, seven steals, and two blocked shots while the Ladies had seven assists, two steals, and three blocks.

Trinity outrebounded Centenary in a close battle, 46-42, and forced 15 turnovers which it turned into 20 points. The Tigers turned the ball over just nine times which led to only two points for the Ladies. Trinity finished with an 11-2 edge in second-chance points, outscored the Ladies in the paint, 20-16, and had an overwhelming advantage in bench points (38-2) while each team scored 13 fast break points.

Jamie Ruede led all scorers with 27 points and was one of three Trinity players to reach double figures as she was joined by Josie Napoli (17) and Kylie Minter (10). Five other players combined to score 26 points. Bailey Timmons grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored five points.

Sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) led the Ladies with 19 points and sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) had 14. Sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) and sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each scored five and senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) and freshman G Kira Latson (Pearland, Texas) each scored two.

Barrow, Bagwell, and Stokes each grabbed nine rebounds and Stokes also blocked a game-high three shots in her 34 minutes. Barrow reached double figures for the 15th time as she was 4-10 from the floor, 5-5 at the FT line and hit one trey with three assists in 37 minutes. Bagwell, playing her final game with the Ladies, played 16 minutes before fouling out. She added one steal to go with her two points. Plumber played 37 minutes and was 7-17 from the field, 3-4 at the FT line, and 2-8 from beyond the arc with four rebounds, an assist, and a steal as she reached double figures for the 15th time. Latson played 34 minutes and grabbed five rebounds with two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot.

Bagwell, Centenary's only senior, finished her impressive five-year career by playing in 87 games with 44 starts and scored 413 points and grabbed 374 rebounds. Last season, she scored a career-high 33 points against Birmingham-Southern, which is tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. She also grabbed 16 rebounds for an impressive double-double and was 13-23 from the floor in 35 minutes as her 13 field goals made are tied for the second-most in a single game in program history and her 21 attempts are tied for the number eight all-time record.
