Georgetown, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team lost a close battle to the Southwestern University Pirates, 59-52, on Saturday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Corbin Robertson Center.

The Ladies (2-20, 1-13 SCAC) rebounded from a 37-point loss on Friday night to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs in Seguin, Texas to play much better on Saturday against the Pirates (5-19, 4-11 SCAC).

The Ladies, who played just six in the game, shot 28.3 % (17-60) from the floor, 23.1 % (3-13) from beyond the arc, and 78.9 % (15-19) from the free throw line. Centenary, one of the league's top free-throw shooting teams as the Maroon and White entered the weekend third at 70 %, have shot 70 % or better 14 times this season and 75 % or better eight times. The Ladies have held nine opponents to 70 points or less this season

Southwestern finished the game at 33.9 % (20-29), 20.7 % (6-29) from beyond the arc, and 65 % (13-20) from the FT line. The Pirates had 19 assists and three steals while outrebounding the Ladies by one, 44-43. Centenary tallied six assists, three steals, and blocked one shot. The Ladies edged the Pirates in points in the paint, 24-22, and second-chance points (20-15). Southwestern scored 14 points off of Centenary's 14 turnovers while Centenary turned the Pirates' 11 turnovers into just two points. Southwestern held an 8-1 edge in fast break points and 25-2 in bench points.

Sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) led all scorers with 16 points, leading the Ladies in scoring for the second day in a row after scoring 17 at Texas Lutheran on Friday night. Plumber, who has now reached double figures 14 times this season, played all 40 minutes and was 5-17 from the floor, 2-5 from beyond the arc, and 4-5 at the FT line. She grabbed seven rebounds and added two assists and a steal. Sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) joined her in double figures with 12 points in 31 minutes on 4-11 shooting. Stokes scored in double figures for the eighth time this season and was 4-5 from the FT line with a team and game-high eight rebounds and added a blocked shot.

Sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) also played all 40 minutes and had a solid game with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal as she was 3-13 from the floor with one trey and went 2-3 at the FT line. Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored seven with six boards and an assist in 29 minutes on 2-5 shooting and finished 3-4 at the FT line. Sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored six in 23 minutes on 2-10 shooting and was 2-2 at the FT line with an assist and a rebound. Freshman G Kira Latson (Pearland, Texas) played a season-high 37 minutes off the bench and scored two points and grabbed five rebounds with one steal.

The Pirates' duo of Aniyah Burke (13) and Trinity Benitez (12) scored nearly half of their teams' points and were the only two Southwestern players in double figures. Emily Jasek scored seven, Ellie Ward and Hallie Mayfield each scored six, and four others combined to score 15 points. Benitez matches Stokes with a game-high eight rebounds and four other Pirates grabbed at least five boards.

The game was tied at 16-16 after the first quarter, the Pirates edged the Ladies 11-9 in the second for a 27-25 halftime lead, then edged the Maroon and White 15-14 in the third and outscored them 17-13 in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.

The Ladies finished 1-13 in the road this season and have lost three in a row after snapping a 13-game losing streak with a home win over St. Thomas in overtime on Jan. 30.

Centenary returns home next weekend for its final two games of the regular season – a pair of conference contests against Schreiner (Friday, Feb. 16 – 7:30 p.m.) and Trinity (Sunday, Feb. 18 – 2 p.m.).
