Jackson, Miss. - The Centenary women's basketball team fell 77-59 to the Millsaps College Majors on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest and its final game of the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic at the Hangar Dome.
The Ladies (1-5) went 1-1 during the weekend after defeating Hendrix by a score of 80-69 on Saturday for their first win of the season. Millsaps (5-1) went undefeated for the weekend following a 62-45 win on Saturday over Austin College.
Centenary shot 32.3 % (20-62) for the game overall, 29.4 % (5-17) from beyond the arc, and a strong 77.8 % (14-18) from the free throw line. Millsaps shot 46.3 % (25-54) from the floor, 14.3 % (3-21) from 3-point range, and 66.7 % (24-36) from the FT line. The Ladies outscored the Majors in a low-scoring first quarter, 11-7, but Millsaps responded with a 23-17 edge in the second period to take a 30-28 halftime lead.
The Majors took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Ladies 27-11 to put some distance between the two with a 57-39 advantage heading into the final quarter. Each team finished with 20 points in the fourth, but the double-digit lead beforehand was too much for the Ladies to overcome.
Sophomore G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Ladies with 15 points, reaching double figures for the second-straight day after scoring 13 in the win over Hendrix on Saturday. Barrow scored in double figures for the fourth time in six games this season as she finished 5-13 from the floor in 34 minutes and was 5-7 at the FT line with five rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Sophomore F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) joined her in double figures as she scored a season-high 14 in 22 minutes off the bench on 4-12 shooting from the floor and made 6-8 from the FT line. She added seven rebounds and one assist.
Sophomore G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) scored a season-high nine points in 26 minutes as she was 3-7 from the floor and 3-6 from beyond the arc with two assists and a rebound, junior G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) added seven in her 27 minutes with three rebounds, three steals, and one assist on 3-7 shooting and went 1-1 at the FT line. Sophomore G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) finished with six points one day after scoring a career-best 23. She was 2-8 and 2-4 from 3-point range in 25 minutes with four rebounds and a blocked shot.
Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) had four points, three rebounds, and one steal in 19 minutes on 2-4 shooting, sophomore F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) had two points, an assist, and a rebound in 15 minutes as she went 2-2 at the FT line, and sophomore G Lauren Castillo (Fort Worth, Texas) also had two in her 10 minutes off the bench with an assist and a rebound. Freshman G Mallory Dougharty (Evadale, Texas) was held scoreless in 17 minutes but she had two rebounds and a steal.
Garin Freeman scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Majors as she was 8-11 from the floor and 5-5 from the FT line in 28 minutes with eight rebounds, a blocked shot, and a steal. Haley Franklin scored 16, Elyse Warren scored nine, Helena Roe had eight, and Whitney Novak added seven.
Millsaps finished with a big advantage in points in the pain, 44-20, and a 40-32 edge in bench points. The Majors scored 14 points off of turnovers compared to seven for the Ladies, Centenary had 14 second-chance points to seven for Millsaps, and the Majors finished with a slight advantage in fast break points, 8-5.
Centenary welcomes Millsaps to town on Wednesday evening for a rematch in a contest set for 5:30 p.m. in the Gold Dome.
