Tornado teams, individuals win academic awards

TEMPE, Ariz. - Both Brevard tennis teams and 10 individuals received major honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their work in the classroom during the 2015-16 academic year.

The men's and women's teams were both named All-Academic Teams by the ITA, an honor bestowed upon teams with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. The Tornados joined Anderson, Coker, Mars Hill, and Tusculum as the only South Atlantic Conference institutions with both its men's and women's teams honored.

Additionally, four men's and six women's players achieve ITA Scholar-Athlete status. In order to receive the honor, student-athletes must be a varsity letterwinner who has been enrolled at their current school for at least two semesters and have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA.

Tim Hengst, Thomas Mittring, Christoph Plasa, and Daniel Taylor were the men's recipients. Claire Dysart, Natalie Green, Anita Maryskova, Samantha Miranda, Kristen Rathbun, and Nirvanna Silva earned the distinction from the women's squad. In all, nearly 77 percent of eligible Brevard tennis players were honored by the ITA.

"I couldn't be happier to see the results that our team had in the classroom," said head men's and women's coach Evan Schreiner. "It's great to see our players exemplifying the 'student' aspect of student-athlete, and I'm extremely proud of all of their accomplishments.
