Women?s tennis season preview

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's tennis team is set to begin Feb. 4 at Southern Wesleyan. The Tornados were picked to finish 12th in the conference with Queens and Wingate tied for first in the rankings in the preseason polls.

Coach Schreiner has been pleased with the improvements his athletes have made throughout the fall and preseason and believes the women will continue to grow after facing various levels of competition throughout the season.

"The women's team has two players returning from last year, and I am pleased with the effort and progress they show," said Schreiner about his two returners. "We rely on them for the leadership that is key to team improvement. I truly appreciate the work ethic they model to our newcomers."

Katie Hatter (Cedar Mountain, N.C.) and Sam Miranda (Valley City, Ohio) will be the leaders of this young squad. Hatter played in 21 single matches and six double contests last season. Miranda claimed two victories at the third singles position last season.

The women will add four freshmen to their roster this season. Carmen Boone (Hudson, N.C.), Audrey Cardwell (Denver, N.C.), Gabi Harness (East Flt Rock, N.C.), and Kelsey Kushner (Tampa, Fla.) join the 2017 roster.

"Our four incoming freshmen will all see plenty of playing time," stated Schreiner. "They are working hard to prepare for the season, getting stronger in both the physical and mental approach. I am looking forward to the growth that comes through match experience."

The women will begin their spring season on Feb. 4, as the Tornados travel to Southern Wesleyan for the first match of the year. Brevard will begin conference play the next day taking on Coker in Hartsville S.C. on Feb. 5. The blue and white will host Lincoln Memorial on Feb. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. for its first home match of the year. The women will take on top-ranked Queens on Feb. 25, and close out conference play against Newberry on April 9.

"All our players' individual efforts combine to create the team and to build our tennis community," said Schreiner. "We work hard to be ever-improving and to offer steady, focused, exciting competition in all our match play. We hope many will come out to support us this spring."
