Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Hendrix Spring Fling Tournament

HENDRIX, Ark. - There was a heavy dose of offense for the Ladies Saturday afternoon, February 17.

Centenary (2-1) used a walk-off sacrifice fly to defeat Westminster (1-1) 11-10 in game one before beating Hendrix (2-3) 7-4 on the first day of the Warrior's Spring Fling Tournament.

In the first game, Centenary raced out to a 7-0 lead but saw the Blue Jays score eight of the next nine runs of the game. In the first, junior Payton LeBlanc scored on a wild pitch before freshman Cheyenne LaComb doubled in a run to give the Ladies a quick 2-0 lead. Centenary scored five in the second, thanks in part to a grand slam from senior Anna Dunn - her second round-tripper of the season.

However, Westminster scored one in the third, six in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Later tied at 10 but with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Erin Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to give the Ladies their first win of the season.

LeBlanc, LaComb, sophomore Haley Campbell, junior Sydney Hurley, and senior Kelsey Ancelot all recorded a pair of hits to lead Centenary offensively. Freshman Krystle Griffin (1-0) threw the final 2.2 innings for the win, giving up three hits and two unearned runs.

In game two against the Warriors, Centenary raced out to a 6-0 lead after the top of the first and cruised to a 7-4 win. To begin the game, Ancelot tripled and scored on Hurley's double. With two in scoring position, Dunn scored a pair with a double. She advanced to third on a single and scored when junior Cassie Gonzales was thrown out trying to take second.

Lewis added a two-run single in the second.

Hendrix scored single tallies in the second, third, fifth, and seventh.

Freshman Taylor Abshire (1-0) picked up the win, allowing nine hits and four runs in six innings of work. Junior Margeaux Smith picked up the save.

Centenary returns to action Sunday, February 18, for a pair of games. The Ladies take on Westminster at 10 a.m. before finishing the day with Hendrix at 2 p.m.
