Softball Splits Doubleheader against Schreiner

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Ladies beat the Mountaineers 8-1 in game one, but could not overcome six errors in game two as Centenary (10-11, 4-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Schreiner (16-7-1, 7-3 SCAC) 4-2 in game two to split the doubleheader Friday night, March 23.

The Ladies used the home run swing to take game one. In the first inning with one on, senior Anna Dunn overcame a 0-2 count to jettison the 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for her sixth home run of the season. With two on and one out in the third, Dunn hit an RBI single before a three-run shot by junior Sydney Hurley gave Centenary a 6-1 lead.

The Maroon and White capped the outburst with a pair in the fourth. After two reached to leadoff the frame and were sacrificed into scoring position, freshman Cheyenne LaComb hit a rare infield sacrifice fly to put Centenary up six. Sophomore Haley Campbell followed with a two-out, RBI hit as Centenary led 8-1 after four innings.

Neither team scored the final three innings as the Ladies took game one despite being outhit 6-5.

Junior Nichole Aldridge (5-5), who later took the loss in game two, allowed five hits and one run in six innings of game one for the win. Dunn led Centenary from the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Schreiner scored its lone run in the second when Mary Buhidar plated Bailee Arellano with a single. Hannah Ortiz (10-2) took the loss for the Mountaineers, allowing five hits and eight runs and three walks in 3.2 innings of work.

Neither team scored in the first three innings of game two. Centenary scored an unearned run in the fourth to go up 1-0. Campbell reached on an error to begin the inning, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. Junior Wendy Gillet scored Campbell thanks to a two-out hit.

However, Schreiner took the lead for good with a three-spot in the fifth. After Courtney Bigly began the inning with a double, she moved to third on a bunt single and tied the game after an error. Gabriela Acuna hit a two-out home run to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the day.

Sophomore Haley Smith added a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but Schreiner answered with an unearned run in the seventh for the final two-run margin.

Aldridge took the loss for the Ladies, allowing five hits and three runs in five innings of work. Schreiner's Jessica Vrana (5-1) recorded the complete-game win, allowing three hits and two runs (one unearned) in seven innings of work.

Centenary and Schreiner complete the four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, March 24, beginning at noon.
