Smithâ??s First Collegiate Home Run Salvages Split for Ladies Softball against Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - After the Ladies fell 9-0 in five innings of game one, sophomore Hallie Smith broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh with her first collegiate home run as Centenary (9-10, 3-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) held on for the win in game two against Southwestern (13-9, 3-5 SCAC) 3-2 in a double header Sunday afternoon, March 18.

Tied at two after three innings of game two, both teams only managed a single hit until the seventh. Leading off the seventh, Smith hit the home run to left field to put the Ladies back ahead by a run. Southwestern managed to put the leadoff person on base in the bottom of the frame, but junior Nichole Aldridge forced a flyout and a lineout double play to end the ballgame.

Aldridge (4-4) twirled her second complete game in as many days, allowing four hits and two runs in seven innings of work.

The Ladies scored a pair in the first to take a quick lead in game two. With one out, senior Jordan Hughes doubled and advanced to third on senior Anna Dunn's single. Dunn stole second, but a wild throw allowed her to advance to third and scored Hughes. An RBI groundout by junior Sydney Hurley scored Dunn to put the Ladies up one.

The Pirates cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the first and a solo home run by Sydney Scott in the third.

Lindsey Longuet (2-1) took the complete game loss, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned).

In game one, Southwestern allowed a single hit while scoring three in the first and six in the third for the run-ruled win. Grace Phelps hit a two-run home run in the first while Kaitlyn Copher added a solo shot to lead off the third.

Phelps finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI's and a run scored. Longuet took the win in game one, allowing one hit in three innings of work with one strikeout.

Freshman Taylor Abshire (3-4) took the loss in game one, allowing nine hits and six earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.

Centenary returns to action against Schreiner with a doubleheader next Friday, March 23. First pitch in Shreveport is scheduled for 4 p.m.
