Ladies Softball Splits Road Double Header at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Ladies never trailed in an 8-3 win in game one, but Centenary (8-9, 2-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Southwestern (12-8, 2-4 SCAC) 13-1 (five innings) in the nightcap as the two teams split a double header Saturday afternoon, March 17.

Tied at two after an inning in game one, the Ladies scored two in the second and two in the third to open up a 6-2 lead. With two outs and no one on in the second, infield singles by junior Payton LeBlanc and sophomore Haley Campbell put two on for senior Anna Dunn. Dunn doubled to left center to clear the bases and put Centenary up for good.

In the third, freshman Erin Lewis was hit by a pitch and advanced to third after a throwing error allowed junior Cassie Gonzales to reach. After a hit batter loaded the bases, a walk to sophomore Hallie Smith and a squeeze by LeBlanc plated another to put the Ladies up 6-2.

After the Pirates scored one in the third, Centenary scored two in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Campbell walked and scored on another double by Dunn. After Dunn advanced to third, a sacrifice fly by junior Sydney Hurley scored the final run of the game.

Dunn finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. LeBlanc went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Nichole Aldridge (3-4) recorded the win in the circle for the Ladies, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

For Southwestern, Grace Phelps went for 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Nadia Netek (4-3) took the loss, allowing six hits and four runs in 1.2 innings of work.

In game two, Dunn added a solo home run in the top of the first for the quick Ladies 1-0 lead, but the Pirates scored the final 13 runs of the game to for the five-inning victory.

Taylor Abshire (3-3) took the loss, allowing five hits and six runs (two earned) in 0.2 innings of work.

Southwestern scored six in the first and five in the third en route to the 13-1 win. Leading the Pirates from the plate was Mary Alex Crosby, who had a hit in both at-bats with three runs scored. McKenna Zienke also had a hit in both at-bats with three RBIs and a run scored.

Lindsey Longuet (1-0) took the win for Southwestern in relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings with a trio of strikeouts.

Centenary and Southwestern will conclude the weekend Sunday, March 18, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
