Softball Drops Pair to Schreiner

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Ladies fell in game one, 6-0, before the Mountaineers used seven unearned runs in the fifth inning of game two to break a 2-2 tie as Centenary (10-13, 4-8 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) lost to Schreiner (18-7-1, 9-3 SCAC) 10-2 in six innings to drop a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, March 24.

Centenary scored both its runs on the day thanks to two-out hits by junior Wendy Gillet. Scoreless in the bottom of the first in game two, junior Payton LeBlanc reached on an error and advanced to third after a pair of groundouts. Gillet then singled up the middle to put the Ladies on the board.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the third with two outs, sophomore Haley Campbell singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Another Gillet single up the middle knotted the game at two.

Starting in the circle for the third game in the series, junior Nichole Aldridge (5-6) took the loss in game two, allowing 10 hits and nine runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings of work.

Tied at two after four, Schreiner scored seven unearned runs to take the 9-2 lead. Ashton Vazquez reached on an error to begin the frame before a single and a walk loaded the bases. Samantha Cordon singled the centerfield to break the tie. With one out, Bailee Arellano flew out to centerfield for a sacrifice fly to give the visitors a 4-2 lead. An RBI single by Kaylee Atchley and a fielding error scored two before a three-run shot by Alyssa Hernandez capped the inning.

Schreiner added a single run in the sixth to complete the 10-2 victory.

Atchley went 3-for-3 in game two to complete a perfect 6-for-6 day at the plate, while Hernandez's three-run shot was her first home run of the season. She also scored another run in the game. Jessica Vrana (6-1) picked up the complete game win, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) and four strikeouts in six innings.

In game one, Schreiner scored single tallies in the third, fourth, and two in the fifth and seventh for the six-run win. Schreiner led 2-0 in the fifth before Rachel Brown hit a two-run shot, her fourth round tripper of the season.

Freshman Taylor Abshire (3-5) took the loss in game one for the Ladies, allowing 12 hits and four runs in five innings of work. Hannah Ortiz (11-2) twirled a complete game shutout for Schreiner, striking out eight.

The Ladies return to action Tuesday, March 27, when it hosts nationally-ranked East Texas Baptist for a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
