SHREVEPORT, La. - Another day, another walk-off victory.
After falling in game one, the Ladies salvaged a split thanks to the third walk off in seven victories in 2018 as Centenary (7-4, 1-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) took game two from Trinity (7-3, 1-1 SCAC) 4-3. However, the Tigers captured game one 5-3 in the Conference opening doubleheader for both teams Saturday afternoon, March 10.
Down 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh of the second game, two key errors and a crucial hit allowed the Ladies to plate three runs. Junior Wendy Gillet led off the frame with a double and was lifted for freshman pinch runner Becca McGough. With one out, McGough advanced to third on a wild pitch. An error put runners on the corners, and a groundout put the tying runs into scoring position for the Ladies. Sophomore Haley Campbell then singled through the left side. McGough scored easily, but freshman pinch runner Na'Lani Zeno slid around the tag at the plate to tie the game. With head's up base running, Campbell scooted to second on the throw home to move the tying run in to scoring position.
Junior pinch hitter Margeaux Smith then walked. Both runners then swiped a bag, but the Trinity catcher threw down to third to try and get the lead runner. The ball got away in to left field as Campbell scored the winning run.
Junior Nichole Aldridge (2-3) picked up the complete game win, allowing three runs on seven hits.
The only other Ladies run came in the bottom of the first. Senior Kelsey Ancelot led off the game with an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on freshman Erin Lewis' RBI groundout.
For Trinity, Stephanie Crumrine hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center, to give the Tigers the lead in the fourth. Hailey Wilson added an RBI single in the fifth.
Adrienne Edwards (2-2) took the loss for Trinity, allowing five hits and four runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings of work.
In game one, Centenary brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after trailing 5-1. Campbell doubled to leadoff the inning and moved to third on when Ancelot legged out an infield hit. However, the attempted throw to first on Ancelot's hit got away from the fielder to allow Campbell to score. A throwing error and a sac bunt moved a pair into scoring position. Lewis was hit by a pitch to load the bases and brought the winning run to the plate in senior Anna Dunn. Dunn just missed a home run, hitting a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left.
A foul out ended the game.
Freshman Taylor Abshire (3-1) threw a complete game for the Ladies, allowing 10 hits and five runs (three earned) with one strikeout in seven innings pitched.
Tied at one in the fourth, Trinity scored four runs to open up a 5-1 lead. Crumrine and Danielle Ruiz both doubled to score a run. Sara McCarty then laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt, but a throwing error allowed McCarty to reach and Ruiz to score. McCarty scored on Edwards double. After being sacrificed to third, Edwards scored on an infield single by Wilson.
Allie Holbrook (4-1) took the win in the circle for Trinity, allowing 10 hits and three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Centenary closes out the weekend with a doubleheader against Trinity with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 11. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
