Dunnâ??s Record Blast Lifts Ladies Softball to 4-0 Win in SCAC Tournament Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas - It took all of three innings for senior Anna Dunn to make her mark on the 2018 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in the opener Friday afternoon, April 27.

Dunn broke the Centenary single-season home run record with a two-out, two-run blast to left center as fourth seeded Centenary (18-20) knocked off fifth seeded Trinity (16-23) 4-0 in the first game of the SCAC Tournament.

The round tripper for Dunn also tied the seven-year old conference record for single-season home runs.

After the first two batters were retired in the second, junior Margeaux Smith walked to bring Dunn to the plate for her second at-bat. After fouling the first pitch off, Dunn hit the ball to deep left center. Off the bat, the ball looked as if it might get caught up in the wind and stay in the yard. However, the ball kept carrying as Dunn secured the record-setting blast to put Centenary up 2-0.

Dunn added a single in the sixth and later scored to help put the Ladies up 4-0. In the inning, freshman Erin Lewis hit a sacrifice fly and Dunn scored on a two-out hit by junior Cassie Gonzales.

Meanwhile, junior Nichole Aldridge (8-9) twirled an 83-pitch, complete game two-hitter, allowing a pair of walks with a strikeout. Only one Tigers' runner advanced to third. In the third with two outs and Devon Potter on first, she swiped second and advanced to third on a throwing error. However, Aldridge won the battle on a seven-pitch at-bat against Stephanie Crumrine, inducing an infield popup.

Aldridge retired Trinity in order in the seventh on only five pitches.

Besides Dunn's 2-for-3 afternoon, junior Wendy Gillet went 1-for-1 with two walks, while Margeaux Smith went 0-for-1 with two walks and a run scored.

Centenary returns to action this afternoon against top-seeded and second-ranked Texas Lutheran. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
